Camden People - Victoria Kwiatkowski Nicktern

VICTORIA KWIATKOSKI NICKTERN was born September 25, 1900 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Vincent and Dora Kwiatkowski. The family moved to Camden thereafter, and three children, Wassie, Rosie, and Frank followed. When the Census was taken in 1910, the family, which also included Dora's parents Joseph and Mary Buoskowksi, lived at 926 Federal Street. By the end of 1919 Vincent Kwiatkowski had passed, and his widow Dora had moved to 224 North 12th Street.

Victoria Kwiatkowski had met a young man from Camden, George Nicktern and the two fell quite in love. World War I intervened, however, and George, who had previously served in the United States Army, returned to service. Upon his return they wed, and by 1920 The couple lived at 1152 Penn Street when the census was taken in January of 1920. He was then working at a leather factory. George and Victoria Nicktern would remain at the Penn Street address through at least April of 1930. By then there were two daughters, Elizabeth and Edna. Victoria Nicktern's brother, Frank Kwiatkowski, resided with the family as well.

George Nicktern joined the Camden Police Department on September 1, 1925. By June of 1940 the family was living at 20 Leonard Avenue in East Camden. The Nickterns were active with the Mathews-Purnell Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, whose post home was at 2712 Hayes Avenue in Cramer Hill. In 1951 Victoria Nicktern served as president of the post's Ladies Auxiliary.

George S. Nicktern passed away on March 9, 1952 and was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly NJ three days later. His wife Victoria Nicktern remained at the home on Leonard Avenue until 1972. Her last days were spent with her daughter Edna in Pine Beach NJ. Victoria Nicktern passed away on December 17, 1995 and lies next to her husband.

Mrs. Bean and Mrs. Mungioli helped install a new auxiliary at the Collingswood VFW post last Wednesday. Thursday the Matthew-Purnell auxiliary held a dinner at Kenney's honoring Department President Mrs. Carrie.

VFW Will Install Steifel Tonight As Post Head

Irving L. Stiefel, veteran of War II, who received a Bronze Star for heroism on Okinawa, will be installed tonight as commander of Corporal Mathews-Purnell Post 518, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Past Department Commander, Joseph H. Meade will act as installing officer.

Stiefel served in the 77th Division during World War II, serving in the Pacific-Asiatic theatre.

Others to be installed are Orris Smith, senior vice commander; Robert Cornog, junior vice commander: Chester Knaub Sr., quartermaster; Burroughs Messick, adjutant; John H. Mohrfeld 3d, post advocate: Stephen L. Walter, chaplain; Chester Knaub Jr., surgeon, and John Morgandale, officer of the day.

Post 518 Auxiliary Planning for Fair

Mrs. Victoria Nicktern presided at the weekly meeting of the ladies auxiliary of Corporal MathewsPurnell Post 518 VFW. Louis Silverman and Chester Knaub spoke about post activities at the forthcoming South Jersey State Fair.

Mrs. Margaret Worrell was appointed chairman of the auxiliary committee for fair activities. Mrs. Nicktern and Mrs. Esther Rowand are committee members.

A donation will be made by the group to the Blind Artist fund. Members of the auxiliary attended the Salvation Army band concert and also services at the Bethany Baptist church, an annual pre-Memorial Day custom with the group.

Delegates Named to State Council at Newark

Mrs. Carrie Bean and Mrs. Theresa Mungioli, of the Ladies Auxiliary, Corporal Mathews-Purnell Post 518, were designated at a recent auxiliary meeting to attend a session of the State Council on Sunday at the Military park hotel, Newark.

Mrs. Bean is chairman of the state budget committee, and Mrs. Mungioli is chairman of the state finance committee. Both women are past department presidents. Mrs. Victoria Nicktern, president of the local auxiliary presided at the session which named Mrs. Bean and Mrs. Mungioli as representatives to the Newark meeting.

The auxiliary conducted a cake sale Friday to raise funds for its organization's activities.

The names of two young people who were among eight receiving awards at Veterans Memorial Junior High school graduation, exercises for outstanding work during the term, and had not been reported previously have been announced as Joan Wark and John Parks.

Group Plans Sale Of Buddy Poppies All Next Week

Ladies of the VFW auxiliary will sell poppies all next week to aid disabled veterans and the maintenance of the VFW national home at Eaton Rapids, Mich., for orphans and widows of deceased and totally disabled veterans.

A motion was made to donate funds to the Salvation Army at a meeting of the Corporal Mathews-Purnell Ladies Auxiliary 518, VFW. Mrs. Victoria Nicktern, president of the auxiliary, presided at the affair. The auxiliary also voted to sponsor a booth at the South Jersey State Fair.

On Sunday the post and auxiliary attended memorial services at Bethany Baptist Church.

VFW Convention Opens Wednesday At Asbury Park

Asbury Park, June 25.-The 1951 encampment of the VFW Department of New Jersey and its auxiliary will begin here at 9 a. m. Wednesday.

The sessions will open at 9 a. m. with registration, followed by a ladies auxiliary department council meeting. Slated for the same day are a joint opening session and annual memorial services and a VFW Department Council of Administration meeting at the Monterey hotel.

Registration will continue Thursday, followed by business sessions and an encampment dinner and a department auxiliary presidents' dinner. On Friday there will be business sessions followed by a cootie session, election of officers and a cootie torchlight parade.

Auxiliary district presidents will hold a breakfast Saturday, followed by other business sessions, a pageant of bugles and drums and a military ball at the Monterey hotel.

Corporal Mathews-Purnell Post 518, of Camden, has engaged a suite of rooms at the Monterey, and Camden Post 980 will have a suite of rooms in the Kingsley Arms hotel.

Mathews-Purnell Post To Mark 30th Year

The 30th anniversary banquet of the Corporal Mathews-Purnell Post 518, VFW, and the 29th anniversary of its auxiliary, will be held on Saturday, October 27, at 7 p. m. at St. Anthony of Padua Parish hall, Twenty-eighth Street and River Road.

Corporal Mathews-Purnell Post No. 518 will celebrate its 30th anniversary at a dinner with the Ladies Auxiliary in the parish hall of the St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, River Avenue and Twenty-eighth Street, Saturday, at 7 p, m. This will be the 29th anniversary for the auxiliary.

The Rev. William J. O'Rourke will give the invocation, the Rev. Warren G. Jennings will say grace and Rabbi Max Weine the benediction.

Eleven Gold Star Mothers will be honored guests of Commander Irving J. Stiefel. They are Mrs. Ada Mathews, Mrs. Katherine Corbett, Mrs. Marie Hunt, Mrs. Catherine Cahill, Mrs. Harry Maisch, Mrs. Joseph Selah, Mrs. Walter Haines, Mrs. Charles Reynolds, Mrs. John Peterson, Mrs. John A. Steve Walter reported that Otto Self is ill in the Philadelphia Naval hospital. Joseph Hasher reported Edward Bossett was in Cooper hospital and doing nicely. He is in room 14.

Congress Responsibility at New Peak, Wolverton Tells VFW Birthday Group

"At no time has the responsibility of Congress and the responsibility of the citizen been greater than at present," Congressman Charles A. Wolverton told an audience Saturday night celebrating the anniversaries of Corporal Mathews-Purnell Post No. 518, VFW, and its auxiliary.

The congressman was principal speaker at a banquet in St. Anthony of Padua parish hall marking the 30th anniversary of the VFW post and the 29th anniversary. of its auxiliary.

Wolverton praised the leaders of the post and commended its record in community activities. He also paid tribute to the Gold Star mothers who were present as honor guests.

Sketches Own Career

He then sketched his own career in Congress in order to show the great changes which the country has undergone in recent times.

"When I went to Congress," he said, "we were in an era of prosperity and then came the depression followed by World War II and the Korean situation. At no other time have I had such an overpowering sense of my responsibilities as a member of Congress as I now have.

Our citizens should also be aware of the enormity of their responsibility.

MATHEWS-PURNELL POST 518 met at 2712 Hayes avenue. Commander Irving L. Stiefel welcomed two members, Robert C. Barr and Charles E. Wilson, both veterans of War II.

Bernard Brown reported that Edward Bassett who underwent three operations in Cooper hospital, was improving at home. Chester Knaub Sr. reported Robert Louis was ill in Cooper Hospital. Robert Morgandale reported that the Last Man's club of War II was progressing and will
make a report later.

After the meeting, a buffet luncheon was sponsored by Commander Steifel in honor of the past commanders and officers of the post and the auxiliary. One hundred and twenty-five members and visitors attended. Among the guests were Mabel Dukes, District Chief Edgar R. Ellender of the Camden fire department, and William E. Hilbmann, who was introduced as the public relations officer of Camden county council. Steifel presented Hilbmann with a pot of flowers.

Hilbmann responded with a few remarks and said he could look back to 30 years ago when John C. Stroud and Raymond G. Price stopped at his house and suggested of the formation of a VFW post in Cramer Hill. "The go ahead sign was given and here's what you see today, one of the finest and best VFW posts in the whole state," Hilbmann said.

Steifel thanked the hosts for their services. They are past presidents of the 518 auxiliary, Mrs. Elizabeth Knaub, Mrs. Ruth Ibes, Mrs. Esther Rowand, Mrs. Margaret Worrell, Mrs. Edna Weaver, Mrs. Beatrice Frederick and Mrs. Etta Papaycik. Demonstration Planned By VFW Auxiliary

Mrs. Victoria Nicktern presided at a meeting of the Cpl. Mathews-Purnell Ladies Auxiliary No. 518, held Friday in the post home. It was decided to hold a miscellaneous demonstration Friday night. Mrs. Ruth Ibe has been named chairman of the affair.

Plans also were discussed for the annual Christmas party. Mrs. Mary Clifford was named chairman of the party committee.

A MONTHLY CARD PARTY will be held next Wednesday evening by Mathews-Purnell Ladies Auxiliary Post 518 at the post home, 2712 Hayes Avenue.
