Camden People - Raymond Paradise

RAYMOND J. PARADISE was born in Camden NJ around 1925 to Michele and Maria (Giordano) Paradiso. When the census was taken in April of 1930 the family lived at 289 Chestnut Street. Three doors away, at 1024 South 3rd Street, lived the Tenerelli family, two of their sons boxed professionally, as Mickey Blair and Frankie Blair. Besides Raymond there were seven older children, Mary, Lily, Carmella, Rose, Albert, Michele Jr., and Joseph. The elder Paradise worked as a mechanic in those years.

After serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II Raymond Paradise returned to Camden. The family still lived at 289 Chestnut Street as late as 1947. He found employment with the Camden Police Department sometime

after January of 1949. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring, serving on the K-9 squad with his partner, a Doberman named Timmy. He also worked as a homicide investigator.

Raymond Paradise and his family had moved to Cherry Hill by the early 1970s. He moved to Avalon NJ with his wife Catherine in 1995. Raymond Paradise passed away on May 23, 2005 at the age of 79.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. This case remains unsolved, almost 39 years later. If you have any information concerning this crime, please e-mail me. Age 79, of Avalon, NJ. Died on Monday, May 23, 2005, at the Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape May Court House, NJ. He was born in Camden and lived here ten years moving from Cherry Hill.
He was a Marine Veteran of WWII. He retired as Lieutenant from the Camden Police Department having served with the K-9 Squad and the Homicide Investigation Division as a Detective. He enjoyed dancing, was an avid reader, and relaxed doing his gardening.
He is survived by his wife Catherine, two sons, Gregory of Voorhees and Raymond of Avalon, a sister, Janet Sardaro and husband, Perry of Marlton, two sisters-in law, Doris Paradise and Dorothy Sebastiani, brothers & sisters-in law, Frank & Ange Mahoney and Babe & Jackie Sebastiani and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Liturgy will be said at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Our Lady of the Angels Church, Garden State Parkway & East Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House, NJ, where relatives and friends may call after10:00 AM. Interment in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
