Camden People - Platte M. Trevito

PLATTE M. TREVITO was born on March 6, 1940 to Leon and Rose Fugaro Trevito. The family appears in the 1940 Camden City Directory at 327 Byron Street in the Poet's Row section of North Camden. Hs father had ties to the Vineland area. His mother's family had been in Camden for many years, coming to the 300 block of Cherry Street in the 1900s.

The family is not listed in the 1943 Directory, but the 1947 City Directory shows an address of 320 Cherry Street, and also indicates that Leon Trevito was serving in the United States Army, which soon . The Trevito family appears in a 1950 City Directory in Alexandria, Virginia. Leon Trevito was serving in the United States Air Force. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before passing away on July 19, 1957 in

Birmingham, Alabama. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

With her husband gone, Mrs. Rose Trevito returned to Camden. The 1959 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory shows Mrs. Trevito at 1334 South Merrimac Road in the Fairview section of Camden.

Platte M. Trevito was appointed to the Camden Police Department after having served in the United States Air Force. He complete his police training in November of 1965, where he was top in his class at firearms proficiency.

Platte Trevito served for 25 years with the Camden Police Department, retiring with the rank of Sergeant. During his time as a policeman, he spent some time working with Camden's K-9 unit, partnering with police dog Baron.

Platte Trevito was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police and stayed active in F.O.P. affairs long after his retirement from the Camden Police Department. Prior to his passing he had served as the Retired Police Officers Liaison. He also was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the USS New Jersey Lodge No. 62 of the Free and Accepted Masons. Platte also was a member of the Independent Citizens Athletic Club of Fairview, Camden, better known as the ICAC Club of Fairview, Camden. He was a member of the ICAC softball team in the 1970s.

Platte Trevito lived at 1170 Collings Road in the Fairview section of Camden for many years before moving to Bellmawr, NJ. His mother passed at the age of 96 in 2005. Platte Trevito passed away on March 1, 2012. Platte Trevito was survived by his wife, the former Lois Crossley, son Leon Trevito and daughters Mrs. Kim Frampton and Mrs. Gina Rigilano, and four grandchildren.

Fugitive Killed In Jersey Shootout

CAMDEN, N.J., Jan. 13— A man sought in the shooting of a police officer was shot and killed after the police cornered him in a vacant building and efforts to have him surrender were answered by gunfire, the police said today.

The fugitive was identified as Russell Wortham, 26 years old.

A police officer, George Fallon, 36, was wounded in the shootout Thursday night. He suffered three bullet wounds of the buttocks and was in stable condition after surgery at Cooper Hospital and University Medical Center.

Sgt. Platte Trevito of the Camden police said the suspect escaped Dec. 17 from the medical center. He was being treated for a bullet wound he received after starting a July shootout in which a Camden police officer, Carlos Vera, was wounded by a stray bullet from another officer. Mr. Wortham faced aggravated-assault charges in that case.

On March 1, 2012, Platte M. Trevito of Bellmawr, NJ and former longtime resident of Fairview, Camden, NJ. Beloved husband of Lois A. Trevito (nee Crossley). Dear father of Kim Frampton (John Williams) of Blackwood, NJ, Leon (Linda) Trevito of Voorhess, NJ and Gina Rigilano of Glendora, NJ. Loving grandfather of 4, Samatha, Grace, Joe, and Dana.

Platte proudly served his county during the Vietnam Era as a US Air Force Veteran. He retired as Police Sergeant from the Camden City Police Department after 25 years of service. He was an active long time member of the F.O.P. and most recently served as the Retired Police Officers Liaison. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the USS New Jersey Lodge # 62 of the Free and Accepted Masons. Platte also was a member of the ICAC Club of Fairview, Camden.

Relatives and friends of the family will meet for his viewings on Sunday evening from 7 to 9pm and on Monday morning from 10:00 to 11:00am in THE BOCCO FUNERAL HOME, 1300 North Kings Hwy., Cherry Hill, NJ. Interment will follow at Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memory contributions in Platte M.
