MARY D. "MAME" GUTHRIDGE was born in Pennsylvania in 1869. She married Thomas Guthridge at 19. He was a son of John Guthridge. The Guthridge family lived at 427 Walnut Street at the time of the 1880 Census and through the compilation of the 1890-1891 Camden City Directory. They later moved en masse to 422 Walnut Street. Thomas Guthridge served as a police officer in Camden during the 1900s and 1910s. Brother-in-law William Guthridge worked for the State of New Jersey as a Fish and Game Warden. Thomas and Mary Guthridge made their home at 759 Mount Vernon Street. Thomas Guthridge died on January 26, 1918. Mary Guthridge was still at that address in April of 1930. Active in local politics, Mary Guthridge served on the Camden County Board of Freeholders from Camden's 7th Ward. She was the first woman to take a seat as a Camden County Freeholder, joining that body in 1930 and serving through at least 1931. By 1940 she had moved to 1012 Division Street, where she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Schuck and grandson Charles A. Schuck when the Census was enumerated in 1940. Mary Guthridge last resided at 1012 Division Street. She passed away at the county hospital at Lakeland on July 7, 1942 and was buried in Evergreeen Cemetery. |
