Camden People - Joseph T. Daley

JOSEPH T. DALEY was born in Pennsylvania in 1872. He lived in Philadelphia in the 1890s with his wife Emma and son Walter J. Daley. Joseph T. Daley first appears in City Directories in Camden in 1899, at 219 Spruce Street, working as a bartender. The 1900 Census shows Joseph and Emma Daley still at 219 Spruce Street, and that Joseph was working as a teamster. They had been married for nine years, and that besides Walter, Emma had bore another child who had died. Joseph T. Daley continued to work as a teamster or driver until his appointment to the Camden Fire Department.

The 1901 Directory shows the family living at 235 Pine Street, and in 1902 and 1903 they were at 249 Pine Street. Directories from 1904 to 1906 list Joseph T. Daley and family at 809 South 3rd Street.

Joseph T. Daley was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on December 2, 1904. He began service on July 1, 1905. The Daley family moved to 945 South 3rd Street prior to the compilation of the 1908 City Directory. He is listed at that address through 1912. Joseph and Emma Daley appear to have separated by 1914. He had moved to 1026 South 2nd Street, where he is listed in City Directories up until the time of his death. Directories from 1915 through 1922 show a "Florice" G. Rang at 1026 South 2nd Street, and the 1926 Directory shows a wife, Florence. This appears to gave been a common-law marriage. Florence Rang and her husband John had separated in 1913. John Rang obtained a divorce in October of 1920.

Joseph T. Dailey served as a member of the Camden Fire Department until his death from a heart attack on February 11, 1927, with Engine Company 1, Engine Company 4, Engine Company 5 and after his promotion to assistant engineer in 1920, Engine Company 2. A newspaper report states that he had been dismissed from service in August of 1911, this appears to have been in error. He was serving at Engine Company 4 by the fall of 1913.

The newspaper article reporting his death refers to his "housekeeper" who was not named, apparently to avoid scandal, as Joseph and Emma Daley never divorced. In 1933, after having taken legal action against the City of Camden, Mrs. Emma Daley was granted a cash settlement and possibly a widow's pension.

Joseph T. Daley's grandson, Private First Class Joseph Charles Daly, was killed in action in Italy on January 22, 1944. Emma Daley died December 22, 1953.
