JOHN PAUL GRYCKIEWICZ was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on February 7, 1918. 

John P. Gryckiewicz was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on November 15, 1940 and reported for duty at the Fire Training School on November 16. He was subsequently assigned to Engine Company 2 on December 9, 1940. After Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 John P. Gyckiewicz enlisted in the United States Navy. 

On August 1, 1942, at Holy Name Catholic Church in North Camden, John Gryckiewicz married. He and his bride Mary were blessed with over 60 years together as well as numerous children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They made their home at 810 North Front Street in North Camden.

John P. Gryckiewicz served his country from 1942 through 1945, leaving he service with the rank of Chief Machinist Mate. Much of his duty was aboard the battleship USS South Dakota, which saw action 

in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operations.

John P. Gryckiewicz returned to duty in 1945 with Engine Company 2. The 1947 Camden City Directory shows him and his wife Mary living at 934 North 19th Street in Cramer Hill, where they stayed through at least the fall of 1956. On June 16, 1951 he was promoted to Captain and assigned to Engine Company 6 at Front and Linden Streets

The Gryckiewciz family, which in time grew to six children, moved to 503 North 36th Street in East Camden by October of 1959. John P. and Mary Gryckiewicz were still living at that address as late as 1977. Son John T. Gryckiewicz followed his father into the Fire Department in 1968.

After serving for 40 years with the Fire Department John P. Gryckiewicz retired in March of 1980. He and his wife Mary moved to New Port Richey, Florida in 1983. Mrs. Gryckiewicz passed away in November of 2005. John Paul Gryckiewicz joined her in June of the following year. They were survived by their six children, John, Michael, Mary, Kathleen, JoAnn, and Theresa, as well as six grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

The Gryckiewiczes

John and Mary Gryckiewicz of Holiday celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 1 with family members, relatives and friends at a party at the Innisbrook Country Club in Tarpon Springs hosted by their six children.

Their children are Mary Diane Lynch and her husband, Richard, of Middleburg, Conn.; Kathleen McCabe and her husband, Donald, of Woodbury Heights, N.J.; Theresa Conlon and her husband, Bernard, of Danville, Calif.; John T. and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Sewell, N.J.; and JoAnn Gryckiewicz and Michael Gryckiewicz, who live at home. They have six grandchildren.

The couple married Aug. 1, 1942, at Holy Name Catholic Church, Camden, N.J. They renewed their vows in February with Bishop John Favalora at a special Mass for anniversary celebrants at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in St. Petersburg.

Gryckiewicz retired in March 1980 after serving 40 years with the Camden (N.J.) City Fire Department.

They moved to Florida in 1983. They are members of the Polish American Club of Holiday and the Forest Hills Civic Association. They attend St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Holiday.

He enjoys spectator sports and she likes crafts.

GRYCKIEWICZ, JOHN PAUL
Age 87, formerly of Camden, died Sunday, June 4, 2006 in New Port Richey, FL. He was born in Bridgeport, CT and moved to Florida from Camden in 1983.
John was retired as a Captain of the Camden Fire Dept. after 40 years service and was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving on the USS South Dakota as chief machinist mate.
He is survived by sons, John T. Gryckiewicz of Deptford, NJ, Michael Gryckiewicz of Hudson, FL; daughters Mary D. Lynch of Chatham, MA, Kathleen McCabe of Woodbury Hgts., NJ, JoAnn G. Gryckiewicz of Port Richey, FL, Theresa Conlon of Ridgefield, CT; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2006 8:30-9:30AM at DOBIES FUNERAL HOME. The service will follow at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church at 10AM. Burial will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. Age 82, of New Port Richey, FL, died Monday, November 7, 2005 at Kindred Hospital, Tampa, FL. She was born in Wildwood, NJ and moved to New Port Richey from Camden, NJ in 1983. She was a homemaker and member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, Holiday, FL.
Survivors include her husband, John; two sons, John of Deptford, NJ and Michael of Hudson, FL; four daughters: Mary Diane Lynch, Chatham, MA, Kathleen McCabe, Woodbury Heights, NJ, JoAnn Gryckiewicz, Port Richey, FL, and Theresa Conlon, Ridgefield, CT; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A visitation will be held Monday, November 14 from 9:30-11:00 AM with a wake service, 10 AM at DOBIES FUNERAL HOME, 4910 Bartelt Road, Holiday, FL 34690.
