Logan


 

JOHN LOGAN was born in New Jersey around 1856 to Thomas and Mary Logan, both of whom had been born in Ireland. The family, which included a daughter, Elizabeth, was living in Camden's North Ward at the time of the 1860 Census. The Logans were still in the North Ward when the 1870 Census was taken. At that time the family consisted of Thomas and Mary Logan and children Bridget, Rosa, John, and Owen. Three more children came during the 1870s, Thomas, William, and Anna Logan.

The 1880 Census shows the Logan family at 513 Bridge Avenue. John J. Logan had already gone into business for himself selling produce.

 

On April 5, 1882 John J. Logan was appointed to the Camden Fire Department to serve as an extra man with the Hook & Ladder Company, replacing Josiah Davis. John J. Logan served with the Fire Department for one year, then was replaced by Peter Gray

John J. Logan was still living at 513 Bridge Avenue when the 1884-1885 Camden City Directory was compiled. The Directory states that he was selling produce at two locations, 505 Market Street and 407 Federal Street. The 1885 Directory shows his businesses at 505 Market Street and at the West Jersey Market. 

The 1887-1888 City Directory gives an address of 563 Mickle Street. By this time he in businesses selling "meats and provisions" at 505 Market Street and at the "NW corner 4th & Market".

The 1888-1889 City Directory shows that John J. Logan had moved to 28 North 3rd Street. His businesses were at the same location.

John J. Logan died of typhoid fever in February 7, 1889. When the 1890 City Directory was compiled, Mary R. Logan was living at 28 North 3rd Street and was running the business at Fourth and Market Streets. John J. Logan's brothers Thomas and William remained in business at 505 Market Street as T.F. & W.J. Logan.
