John
Cherry

JOHN CHERRY born March 1844 (1900 Census) of Irish parents. His early years are a bit of a mystery, as all records and his own personal account prior to the 1920 Census state that he was a native New Yorker. He told the census taker in 1920, however that he had been born in Ireland, came to the United States in 1852, and was naturalized in 1867. 

According to the 1890 Veteran's Census, John Cherry served in Company B, 37th New York May to August 1862. After leaving the Army he traveled about the country before coming to New Jersey in the 1870s. He married around 1876. His wife Martha was a native of the state.

John Cherry first appears in Camden City Directories in 1878, living at 209 Bridge Avenue. By the time the 1881 City Directory was compiled he had opened a restaurant at 134 Federal Street. John Cherry stayed at that location as

late as 1888. By 1890 he had moved his home and business to 550 Federal Street, where he conducted his restaurant until at least 1896. The 1897 City Directory shows him living at 217 South 5th Street. John and Martha Cherry, who never were blessed with children, are listed at 542 Federal Street in City Directories from 1898 to 1901. The 1902 Directory shows a move to 23 Hudson Street. By 1903 He and and his wife had moved to 517 Benson Street, where they would live out their days.

By 1890 John Cherry had become quite active in Republican politics in Camden. By the spring of 1899 he had been rewarded for his activities with a position as a detective in the Camden County prosecutor's office. He served in the Prosecutors office as late as 1913. By the time the 1914 City Directory was published, John Cherry had retired.

In his capacity as county detective, John Cherry was involved in all sorts of cases, both major and minor. For a time in the 1900s, John Cherry was also a Justice of the Peace, which put him in the position of policeman and judge simultaneously. He apparently kept that sort of activity confined to traffic cases.

Martha Cherry passed away on August 6, 1908. John Cherry lived with his widowed sister, Ellen F. Eagen from the late 1900s into the 1920s.

John Cherry died in 1923 and was buried next to his wife at Calvary Cemetery in what was then Delaware Township (present-day Cherry Hill), New Jersey.

The Paul Woodward Murder Case

On October 1, 1902 Paul Woodward murdered two young boys by giving them poison. Frank T. Lloyd, then Camden County prosecutor, was responsible for leading the investigation and prosecuting the case. County Detective Cherry was involved in the investigation. Woodward was arrested on October 4, 1902. Detective Cherry was present later that day when Woodward was identified as being seen with the two victims. Woodward was indicted, tried, convicted of murder in the first degree, and on January 7, 1903 executed at the Camden County Jail.
