GEORGE J. BINGEMANN SR. was born in Germany around 18963 and came to America around 1881. By September of 1896, when his son Ralph was born, George J. Bingemann, his wife Maria and their children had come to Stockton Township, which would be annexed to Camden in 1899. There were already three other sons in the family, Karl (Charles), Ernest, and Frederick. Around 1898 George J. Bingemann, opened a bakery 2513 Federal Street in what would become East Camden after the Stockton annexation. This bakery would remain in business for 25 years at that location, which would also be ther Bingemann home. Three more children, George, Laura, and Arthur, were born during the 1900s. The family and the bakery business was still at 2513 Federal Street when the Census was taken in 1910. Interestingly, then living at 2511 was the Kotlikoff family, who would be in the retail business on that block until 1982, and at 2509 Federal, the Liberman family, son Lewis Liberman would become a well known lawyer and judge in Camden after World War I. When the Census was taken in 1920 the Bingemann family was still at 2513 Federal Street. Ralph F. Bingemann, however, was not living with his family when the Census was taken. He had moved out and was boarding at 2202 River Road. The 1924 City Directory shows George Bingemann living at 13 S 33rd Street. He later moved to 211 South 32nd street. George J. Bingemann died in June of 1933, survived by his wife, children, and five grandchildren. |
