George
Hennessey

GEORGE CALVIN HENNESSEY JR. served for over 30 years with the Camden Fire Department.

George C. Hennessey was born in New Jersey in 1918 to George Calvin Hennessey and the former Wilhelmina Ley. His father was 19 years older than his mother and worked as a foreman at the Eavenson & Leveriug wool scouring plant at South 3rd and Jackson Streets. The family was living at 823 South 6th Street when the Census was taken in January of 1920 and when the City Directory was compiled for 1921. The 1922 and 1923 Directories show the family at 921 Cedar Street in North Camden and indicate that the elder Hennessey had changed employers. By the time the 1924 Directory was compiled he had passed away. Mrs. Hennessey and young George were then living at 577 Pine Street. They are still listed at that address as late as 1927. By the time the 1929 City Directory was compiled she had remarried. Her new husband was David Bakley, a member of the Camden Fire Department. They set up home at 626 Clinton Street  and remained their into the 1950s. His stepfather passed in 1952.

George C. Hennessey began his service with the Camden Fire Department on April 1, 1947. By this time he had married, the young couple were living with his parents at Clinton Street,

In 1959 George C. Hennessey lived at 44 Wood Street in North Camden. He was serving as a ladderman with Ladder Company 1 in February of 1962. By November of 1964 he had gone to work in the department in the Fire Marshall's office, and was still serving in that capacity in 1977. By 1981 he had retired from the Camden Fire Department and had gone to work for Camden County as a fire investigator.

George C. Hennessey was married to Helen Staehle. They were not blessed with children. He had passed away by the time she died in August of 2014.

THE NICE THING ABOUT THE JUNGLE is that there are no firemen in it. This was the opinion of the monkey (in the cage) who is being escorted to the ground by (left to fight) acting Captain James Jones and Firemen George Hennessey and Wesley Faust. The monkey. who had been hiding out for five days on the rooftop at 333 Mickle Street, was captured in an SPCA wire and wool trap today.
