Schellenger Jr.


 

DR. EDWARD AUGUSTUS YORK SCHELLENGER JR. was born in Camden on December 9, 1903 to Dr. Edward A.Y. Schellenger Sr. and his wife, the former Lillian Patterson. His father was a prominent surgeon and his mother was daughter of Francis Ford Patterson Sr., Camden newspaper editor and publisher, and her brothers Francis F. Patterson Jr. and Wolcott Patterson were also quite prominent in local journalism. He was the second children coming after a sister Elizabeth. The Schellenger family lived at 429 Cooper Street in Camden, where the elder Schellenger also had his offices.

Sadly, Dr. Schellenger Sr. died in 1917 as a result of injuries sustained in the operation of an early x-ray machine. Sister Elizabeth also died young, from polio, at the age of 18. Lillian Schellenger moved to Merchantville, but kept the Cooper street building, which had been in her family since the 1870s.

Edward Schellenger Jr. graduated from Camden High School in 1922. He attended Lehigh University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1925. He subsequently went in to medicine, receiving his doctorate from the Jefferson Medical College in 1929. Dr. Schellenger Jr. interned at Cooper Hospital in 1930. He did post-graduate work in gynecology at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1932, and subsequently was awarded a diploma from the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Specializing in gynecology, Dr. Schellenger Jr. served as the attending gynecologist at Cooper Hospital, Clinical Assistant Gynecologist at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Consulting Gynecologist at Camden County General Hospital at Lakeland, and Consulting Gynecologist at Ancora State Hospital. He also taught, as an Associate Professor in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Jefferson medical College in Philadelphia.

Dr. Schellenger Jr. was a member of the Camden County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Philadelphia Obstetrics Society, F.A.C.S., the New Jersey Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Schellenger Jr. served with the United States Marine Corps during from 1942 through 1945. He had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before the end of World War II. Dr. Schellenger was married to the former Margaret Clayton. There were two children, Edward A.Y. Schellenger III, and Elizabeth Clayton Schellenger

Dr. Schellenger used the building at 429 Cooper Street for his medical practice office for 35 years.  When he retired, he donated the building to Rutgers University.

Last a resident of Merchantville NJ, Dr. Edward A.Y. Schellenger Jr. died on May 19, 1993.
