ASA
V. BORTON was born in Columbus, New Jersey to Jesse and Mary
Borton. He was one of eight children, the others being Alfred,
Jacob, Rebecca, Anna, James, Rachel, and Mary. Jesse Borton came
to Camden in the 1860s. When the Census was taken in 1870, Jesse
and Mary Borton were living in Camden's Middle Ward with three
of their children, Jacob, Rachel, and Asa Borton.
On
November 21, 1876 Asa V. Borton was appointed to the Camden Fire
Department to serve as an extra man with Engine Company
1, filling the position of Lewis
Holl. Asa Barton resigned from the Fire Department on
May 8, 1877. He was replaced by Amos
Richard Dease.
Jesse
Borton and his family left Camden shortly thereafter. They were
not in the city when the 1878-1879 Camden City Directory was
being compiled. The Bortons were living in Fairfield, Indiana
when the 1880 Census was taken. Jesse Borton worked as a
huckster most of the rest of his life. He married and settled in
Bloomington, Indiana where he died on March 3, 1945.
