GUNNER'S MATE THIRD CLASS GEORGE E. DYE was born to Charles H. and Ruth Dye in on April 22, 1926. The family lived on County House Road in Winslow Township NJ. His parents were from Maryland, and had lived in New Jersey from at least 1920. Charles Dye had served as a Private during World War I. George Dye drowned while fighting a gasoline fire that threatened his ship in Los Angeles Harbor on October 21, 1944. Overcome by fumes from the gasoline, he fell into the water and drowned before a rescue could be made. He was 18 at the time of his death. Last a resident of Raritan Avenue in Atco, Waterford Township NJ, George Dye was survived by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters. His body was returned to NJ, where his funeral was held on November 3, 1944. He is buried in the Sicklerville Cemetery in Winslow Township NJ, where he rests with his parents. |
