WAR MEMORIAL

The Furer-Barag Post #126 of the Jewish War Veterans donated this monument, located at Crescent Burial Park on Route 130 South and Union Avenue in Pennsauken NJ, September 12, 1982. The post is named for two Camden men, John Furer and Herbert Barag, who gave their lives for America in World War II.

SEPTEMBER 12, 1982


HMTS ROHNA

  Six men from Camden NJ, Frank Ballerino, Michael Carr,  Michael Yachus, Lewis Riondino, Stephen V. Koscianski, and Joseph H. Johnson died together when the troop transport HMTS Rohna was struck by a German guided glider bomb and sank of the coast of North Africa. Six other Camden County men, Jacob Kessler Jenkins and Carl Johanson of Pennsauken, Harry V. Taylor Jr. of Haddonfield, William McKeon of Blackwood, Merl Reagle of Lindenwold, and Elmer F. Day of Merchantville also were lost. In addition 8 other South Jersey men who were on the Rohna  also lost their lives. In total, 1,015 men were lost, but the story was never told to the families or the general public for over 57 years due to wartime censorship.
