FAIRVIEW - YORKSHIP SQUARE
WAR MEMORIAL


       Situated on Yorkship Square in the historic Fairview Village section of Camden NJ, this monument was raised by a neighborhood organization known as the United Memorial Association of Fairview. A Bronze plaque was latter added to memorialize two fallen heroes of the Korean War, and on e from Vietnam.

     This neighborhood was built around the time of World War I to house workers for the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, a major employer in the region and a vital part of America's defense industry.  For more about Fairview Village, visit the website A PLACE CALLED YORKSHIP

      This neighborhood lies partially in what was Camden's 8th Ward. Some of the men memorialized here are also have their names engraved on the 8th Ward World War II War Memorial located on the grounds of American Legion Post 274  at Broadway (Rte 551) & Jefferson Street in Camden, at the upper left-hand corner of this map.

HMTS Rohna

        One man listed on this memorial, Joseph H. Johnson died when the troop transport HMTS Rohna was struck by a German guided glider bomb and sank of the coast of North Africa. Five other men from South Camden, Frank Ballerino, Michael Carr, Stephen V. Koscianski, Lewis Riondino, & Michael Yachus also were lost that day, along with six other Camden County men, 19 year-old Harry V. Taylor Jr. of Haddonfield, William McKeon of Blackwood, Merl Reagle of Lindenwold, Carl Johanson and Joseph K. Jenkins of Pennsauken,  and Elmer F. Day of Merchantville. In addition, eight other South Jersey men were killed. In total, 1,015 men were lost, but the story was never told to the families or the general public for over 57 years due to wartime censorship.
