Camden Fire Department - 2004 Howell Street

The 2000 block of Howell Street has been the scene of numerous fires over the years. Consisting of a row of ten homes built in 1909, only 2000 Howell Street was legally occupied at the time of this fire. 2018 Howell Street was demolished several years a ago. 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 Howell Street had been scheduled for demolition two weeks prior to this fire. 2002 Howell Street appears to have been secured by the owner of 2000 Howell Street. 2004 Howell Street appears to have been occupied as late as 2010, although a photograph taken in the spring of 2011 seems to indicate that no one was living there at the time..

Fire was reported in the abandoned dwelling at 2004 Howell Street a little after 5:30 PM on March 16, 2012. Coming from Pennsauken, I arrived in scene and took the first photograph at 5:52 PM. Engine Company 11, Engine Company 9, and Ladder Company 3 (using Ladder Company 2's apparatus) were on hand and operating. The fire was quickly knocked down and companies were wrapping up by 6:17 PM. 2004 Howell Street appeared to have been used by illegal trespassers. An investigation of the adjoining property at 2006 Howell Street determined that an illegal hook-up of electrical and gas utilities was in evidence and the utility company was notified so that these issues could be addressed.
