John Henry Moses

SECOND LIEUTENANT JOHN HENRY MOSES was born John Henry Majkszak to Henry and Apolonia Majkszak on March 1, 1918. He had graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden in June of 1937. While at Wilson he was President of Student Government, and was on the football, baseball, and track teams. One of his closest friends while growing up in Camden was John R.  White, whose grandparents lived a few doors away, on Chestnut Street near Louis Street. 

John Moses graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia PA in 1942. After college John Moses worked for the Russ Company in Camden NJ. He married Elizabeth Ryzinski, and they made their home at 1549 Mount Ephraim Avenue in Camden.

John Henry Moses was an active member of St. Joseph Church at 10th & Liberty Street in Camden NJ, where he also participated in the Holy Name Society. 

Both John Moses and his friend John White entered the Army on February 8, 1943. Both qualified for flight school; White was trained as a fighter pilot, while John Moses was trained as a bombardier-navigator. After training at San Antonio TX, Maxwell Field AL, and Greenville SC, John Moses and his crew joined the 428th Bomber Squadron, going overseas on June 22, 1944. Flying out of a base on the island of Corsica, he was killed in action over Italy on September 18, 1944.

John Henry Moses was survived by his wife Elizabeth, a son James John, his parents, a brother Marion, and a sister, Mrs. Stella Fus. His death was reported in the July 16, 1945 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. His widow, Elizabeth Moses, taught at Camden High School for 37 years before retiring.
