PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ROBERT E. COATES had lived at 1922 Pierce Avenue in the Cramer Hill section of Camden NJ. He had attended Woodrow Wilson High School, and had worked at the New York Shipbuilding yards prior to being inducted into the United States Army in December of 1942. 

Private Coates was sent overseas in February 1943. Assigned to the 362nd Infantry regiment, 91st Infantry Division, he was killed in action in Italy on September 20, 1944. He was survived by his parents, Edna May Coates and Norman O. Stratton. His death was reported in the October 12, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.
