TECHNICIAN FIFTH CLASS WILLIAM W. PHENEGER JR. was born in Pennsylvania in 1920 to William and Marie Pheneger. By 1927 the family was renting a home at 418 Erie Street in North Camden. They later moved to 920 North 7th Street in the same neighborhood of Camden NJ.. The elder Pheneger worked as a cooper for a refining company.

William Pheneger was killed when the landing craft he was in, LST-422, was sunk by attacking German forces off the coast of Italy on January 26, 1944. Several other local men were lost.

Technician Fifth Class William Pheneger was survived by his parents, and his sisters, Alice and Marie. His death was reported in the September 19, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.
