William W. L. Dube

PRIVATE WILLIAM W. L. DUBE was born in New Haven, Connecticut on August 15, 1923, the eighth of eleven children born to Wilfred J. and Henrietta Dube. Wilfred Dube, a tool maker by trade, was from Massachusetts, his wife Henrietta was French Canadian. The family lived in Massachusetts originally, and had moved to Connecticut by 1920. The Dube family moved to Camden NJ sometime in the 1930s, and lived at 712 Penn Street, not far from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The Dube family also had ties to Ansonia CT, and several of the Dube children later moved there.

William Dube attended Burrough Junior High School and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School on Federal Street in Camden in 1941. One of five brothers who served America during World War II, he was inducted into the United States Army on July 3, 1943.

Private Dube underwent basic training and in January of 1943 he completed training at the Armored Replacement Center at Fort Knox KY. He was subsequently assigned to Troop A, 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 102nd Cavalry Group, which served as a forward reconnaissance and screening unit.

Private Dube was killed in action while laying anti-tank mines in front of the troop sector near Monschau, Germany along with Private Robert C. Wynn of New York on December 18, 1944.

After the war, William Dube was brought home aboard the USAT Joseph V. Connolly, arriving October 27, 1947. He was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly NJ on November 20, 1947. Survivors included his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Dube, Sr., seven brothers George, Hermis, Edward, Henry, Paul, Roland, and Wilfred Jr., and three sisters. William Dube's father Wilfred J. Dube is not to be confused with Wilfred L. Dube, who had a long career in law enforcement and who eventually rose to the rank of Chief of Detectives of the Camden County Prosecutor's office and later operated a private detective agency in Camden.

Glee club members of merit got the award of a pin in school colors bearing a music staff and quarter notes.

Students representing their class in four consecutive intra-mural sports received the block letter "B" for sweaters. Certificates were awarded to girls' championship class teams in volleyball and Newcomb.
