SERGEANT WILLIAM J. LLOYD
entered the Army in 1940 from Camden NJ. He was a member of the 16th
Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, and took part in the invasion
of North Africa, where he saw combat against the Vichy French. He was
wounded in combat with German forces in Tunisia, and was awarded the
Purple Heart.
Sergeant Lloyd drowned during the landing on Omaha Beach on June 6,
1944. Initially declared as missing in action, his body was not
recovered until some time after the landings, and he was not declared
dead until December of 1944. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy
Lloyd, of 881 Belmont Avenue, Philadelphia PA, and his mother, Mrs. Mary
J. Neville, of 1107 Beideman Avenue, Camden NJ. |
