PRIVATE WALTER LEHMAN was
born in Camden NJ in 1907. The third of 8 children, his father passed
away sometime between 1917 and January of 1920, leaving his mother, Lois
Lehman, to tend to the family. In 1920 the family was living at 1741 South 7th Street
in Camden's 8th Ward. The two oldest children,
Frank, 17, and Alice, 16, were already working. By 1930 the family had
moved to a nearby house at 643 Central
Avenue. Walter Lehman was by this
time working as laundry truck driver, other children wore working in
Camden's woolen mills and cigar factory. He later went to work for the
Eavenson and Levering wool scouring mill at South
4th and Jackson
Streets in Camden, not far from his home at 1822 South 7th Street,
Camden. The Army states that he had worked as a draftsman.
Walter Lehman was drafted
into the United States Army at Fort Dix NJ on June 4, 1942. Assigned to the 15th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, he served in the same regiment
as Audie Murphy. Private
Lehman saw a great deal of combat. He was wounded in North Africa and on
Sicily, for which he had already received the Purple Heart. He was killed in action at
Anzio in Italy on March 4, 1944, during the final German assault on the
beachhead.
Walter Lehman was survived
by his brother Harry Lehman, of the South 7th Street address, brothers
Frank and Raymond Lehman, and four sisters, Mrs. Alice Olick, Mrs. Margaret
Carmanna, Mrs. Lois Myers, and Miss Alma Lehman. Sadly,
Walter Lehman's nephew, Walter H. Lehman, committed suicide on October
11, 1949 in Camden. |
