PRIVATE LESTER C. NEWTON
was born in New Jersey on March 21, 1914. By 1930 his mother Emma had
was re-married to William Powell of 1533 Federal Street, of Camden NJ,
and Lester and his older brother Charles lived their as well. His mother
worked as a seasoner in a leather factory, and his father worked as a
mate on a dredge. By the war years the family had moved to 94 State
Street in Camden, near the pier where the dredge operated out of. Lester
Newton, after leaving school, found employment at the Campbell Soup
factory near his home. In 1934 he joined the new Jersey National Guard.
Lester Newton was called
to active duty in September of 1940 with the 112th Field Artillery
Regiment. When the regiment was broken up, his unit was reorganized as
the 228th Field Artillery Battalion. His unit went over seas in February
of 1944. Private Newton was killed in action in France on July 31, 1944, at the age
of 30, and was survived by his mother. His death was reported in
the August 21, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.
After the war had ended,
Lester Newton was brought home to New Jersey. He rests at Beverly
National Cemetery in Beverly NJ, where he was buried on June 3, 1949. |
