STAFF SERGEANT JOSEPH SCHMIDT was the son of Mrs. Rachel Schmidt, of Victoria Street in Pennsauken NJ. He was employed by the Armstrong Cork Company in Camden NJ prior to being inducted into the Army on March 15, 1943. He had married Miss Ruth H. Valentine before going overseas as an infantry replacement and was assigned to the 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division..

Staff Sergeant Joseph Schmidt wrote home from Italy on February 1, 1944 stating that he was well, and was writing from a foxhole. He was killed in action on the following day at the age of 20. His death was reported in the March 18, 1944 evening edition of the Camden Courier-Post.

Joseph Schmidt was survived by his wife and a six-month old daughter, Carol Ann Schmidt. They were living at 319 North 38th Street in Camden NJ, the home of Mrs. Schmidt's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Valentine. He was also survived by his mother, and 1 year old twin sisters, Doris and Jean Schmidt.
