PLATOON SERGEANT JOHN FRANCIS
CARBERRY was born in Pennsylvania in July of 1915 to John J. and
Margaret Carberry. His father worked as a house painter. By 1920 the
family, which include two older daughters, Elinor and Margaret, and a
younger brother, William, made their home on Poplar Avenue in Maple
Shade NJ. By 1930 the family had moved to 215 South 5th Street in Camden
NJ. The elder Carberry had passed away, and Mrs. Carberry supported the
three children still at home by renting rooms. John Carberry joined the
United States Marine Corps in 1936. His mother moved into the
then new Westfield Acres public housing project around 1938.
A career Marine, John Francis Carberry
reached the rank of Platoon Sergeant. According to the October 7, 1943 edition
of the Camden Courier-Post, he fought at Guadalcanal. He had been
returned to the United States and was based on the east coast when he
was killed in a car accident that also took the life of Platoon Sergeant
William P. Story on October 1, 1943 at New River NC. He was
28 at the time of his death.
John Carberry was returned
home to New Jersey. His funeral was held at the Leonard Funeral Home at
2850 Federal Street in Camden, and a Mass was said for him at St.
Joseph's Church at 29th and Federal Streets on October 8, 1943. Sergeant
Carberry was buried at Calvary Cemetery in what was then Delaware
Township (present-day Cherry Hill) NJ.
