SECOND LIEUTENANT JAMES A. SEGAWA, 21, of 3161 Westfield Avenue in Camden NJ, was killed when the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter he was piloting crashed on a training flight in Texas near Foster Field, where he was stationed. James Segawa was the son of Mrs. A. Marie Segawa, of the Camden address. His father had passed away earlier. The Segawa family had moved to the brand new Westfield Acres public housing project on Westfield Avenue in Camden in 1938. He graduated from Camden Catholic High School in Camden in 1941, participating in football and the school band during his tenure there. After High School he attended the Drexel Technical Institute in Philadelphia, now known as Drexel University. He also worked for the RCA-Victor Division of the Radio Corporation of America in Camden, and for the Philadelphia Signal Depot, before enlisting in the Army on February 18, 1943. James Segawa qualified for the Army Air Force, and trained at Miami FL and Marietta OH before being assigned to Foster Field in Texas. He graduated from Officer Candidate School, won his wings, and was commissioned on June 26. 1944. Besides his mother, Second Lieutenant Segawa was survived by a brother, Robert, and two sisters, Dorothy and Frances, all of whom lived with their mother at the Westfield Avenue address. |
