PRIVATE FIRST CLASS FRANK TAMRU was born in New Jersey around 1917, the son of Fred and Josephine Tamru. Fred Tamru worked as a barber, and had his own shop. Josephine Tamru was active in Republican politics in her neighborhood. In the 1920s and 1930s, the family shared a duplex with the Travaline family at 1117 South 4th Street. Their sons, Dominick 'Don' Travaline and Frank M. Travaline Jr. were well known in musical and political circles respectively.

Frank Tamru was a graduate of Camden High School. Known to friends as "Buddy", he was killed in a vehicle accident while serving in Italy with the United States Army on April 27, 1945.
