PRIVATE FIRST CLASS EARL CHEW was the son of Ralph and Clara Tortual Chew. He was born on July 18, 1923 in Gloucester City NJ, where his parents lived at 504 Powell Street in 1930. Ralph Chew then worked as a building laborer. The family later moved to 705 Fairview Street, Camden NJ, where Earl Chew attended the H.B. Wilson School. The family at that point included a brother, Ralph Jr., and sisters Ann and Doris. Earl Chew was inducted into the Army on April 2, 1943. He had been working as an assembler at the RCA-Victor plant in Camden NJ. Sent overseas in October of 1943, Earl Chew was killed in action at the age of 21 while serving in France on September 17, 1944 as reported in the October 12, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Chew, a brother Ralph, and sisters Anne and Doris. His grandfather, Oliver Chew of Wildwood Villas, and his grandmother, Clara Tourtual of 715 Powell St, Gloucester City both died shortly afterwards, although neither had been notified of Private Chew's death. His passing was reported in the October 12, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. Earl Chew was brought home in 1948. He was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly NJ on July 8, 1948. |
