PRIVATE DOMINIC P. MONTEMURRO was born in January of 1917 in New Jersey to Joseph and Caroline Montemurro. Joseph Montemurro had come to New Jersey in 1901 from Italy, and supported his family by working at a radio factory. His wife had arrived in 1905. Joseph and Caroline married the following year, and by 1930 were living at 1831 South 6th Street in Camden NJ. Dominic Montemurro was the fourth of five children. He attended Hatch Junior High School, and was a 1935 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden NJ, where he played on the varsity football team from his sophomore year on. He also took part in many other school activities.
Prior to his induction into the United States Army, Dominic Montemurro had married, and lived with his wife Rose at 495 Newton Avenue. He had worked for at the Randolph Chevrolet dealership on Haddon Avenue in Camden, and the Penn-Jersey Shipyard, also in Camden NJ. His father, Joseph Montemurro, passed away in 1942, and was buried at New St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmawr NJ. After serving in North Africa, Private Montemurro went to Italy as a member of the 34th Infantry Division. He was killed in action on September 13, 1944 during the two-week long battle for control of Hill 810, north of Livorno, a key point in the Gothic Line fortifications that the German army had constructed to defend northern Italy. Dominic Montemurro was survived by his wife Rose, mother Caroline, sister Lucy, and brothers Peter, John, and Anthony. John Montemurro was at the time serving in France, and Anthony was serving at Fort Monmouth NJ. He was brought home to New Jersey, and was buried by his father at New St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmawr. He now rests with his parents and sister, Louise Levy. |
