PRIVATE CHARLES T. O’NIEL was born in 1908 to Charles P. and Mary O’Niel. He grew up in Camden NJ, attended St. Mary’s School, and had worked at the New York Shipbuilding Company yards in Camden prior to entering the Army on September 11, 1943. After training in South Carolina and at Fort Meade MD, he was sent overseas in February of 1944. Serving in Italy, he was with the first U.S. Army to enter Rome.

Private O’Niel was killed in action in Italy in the summer of 1944, at the age of 36. Surviving Private O’Niel were his father and sister Margaret Toussaint, of 2048 Kansas Road, Camden NJ, and sister Mary Balyer of 1063 Niagara Road, Camden NJ, with whom he had made his home with.
