Charles M. Smith

PRIVATE CHARLES M. SMITH, of 2791 North Congress Road, Camden NJ was killed in action during the invasion of North Africa on November 9, 1944 at Oran. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bryant, raised Charles Smith along with his brother Jack R. Smith, as their mother died when they were quite young. He attended the Yorkship School, Hatch Junior High, and Camden High School in Camden NJ, and had worked for a year at the New York Shipbuilding Company before entering the Army in April of 1941. He received his basic training at Camp Croft SC, and was sent overseas in August of 1942. He had sent a card to his family in Camden in September 1942, stating that he was soon to go into action.

Charles M. Smith was survived by his grandparents, an aunt, Mrs. Maude Underhill, of the North Congress Road address, whom with he had lived prior to entering the Army, and his brother Jack R. Smith , then serving in the United States Army Air Force. 

Private Smith was brought home after the war. His body was returned to the United States aboard the USAT Barney Kirschbaum in May of 1948 and he was buried on May 29, 1948 at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson Township NJ.
