PRIVATE CHARLES A. BRUNK JR. was born in Camden NJ in 1922. the son of Charles and Catherine Brunk. His uncle was a popular Camden police officer, Charles Naylor. In 1930 the Brunk family, which included a younger daughter, Isabel, lived in the home of Catherine Brunk's parents, Richard and Isabel Naylor, along with Catherine's brother, Arthur Naylor, at 258 Kaighn Avenue. Charles Sr. at this time worked as a washer in a wool mill, most likely the Eavenson and Levering wool scouring plant at South 3rd and Jackson Streets. The Brunk family later moved to a home at 3027 Tuckahoe Road, in the Fairview section of Camden. Charles Brunk was a 1939 graduate of Camden High School, and worked as a coppersmith at the New York Shipbuilding plant. He was active in league bowling, and was a member of the Pine Valley Gun Club, before his induction into the United States Army on July 1, 1943. Private Brunk reported to Fort Dix on July 1, 1943. He was sent to Camp Sibert AL on July 10th. On July 23, 1943 Private Charles A. Brunk died from sunstroke. He was survived by his parents, and sister, Mrs. Isabel Mott, of 323 Wilson, in West Collingswood NJ. His body was brought home, and he rests in Evergreen Cemetery, in Camden NJ. Charles Brunk's death was reported in the July 27, 1943 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. |
