PRIVATE ANTHONY J. FLEMMING was born on February 6, 1913, one of ten children born to Joseph and Alice G. Flemming. His early years were spent at 218 North 12th Street in Camden. By April of 1930 the family had moved around the corner, to 1117 Cooper Street. in Camden during the 1920s and 1930s. Joseph Flemming worked as a shaver in a leather factory during the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. Anthony Flemming had married before entering the service. He lived with his wife Lillian at 835 Federal Street in Camden. He was employed as a driver in the circulation department of the Camden Courier-Post prior to his induction into the Army on March 31, 1944 at Fort Dix NJ. Private Flemming was sent overseas as an infantry replacement, he was assigned to Company E of the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division in September of 1944. He died of wounds received in action on November 25, 1944. Anthony Flemming was survived by his wife Lillian, of the Federal Street address, his parents, of 1117 Cooper Street in Camden, four sisters and five brothers. He was was brought home aboard the USAT Joseph V. Connolly, arriving October 27, 1947, and buried at Calvary Cemetery in Delaware Township (present-day Cherry Hill) NJ in November of 1947. |
