Andrew F. Dickson

PRIVATE ANDREW FREDERICK DICKSON was born in 1919 to David F. and Helen Anna Olsen Dickson, of 507 9th Street in Gloucester City NJ. His father was then an erector at a shipyard, he later worked as machine operator at the Haddon Press bookbindery in Camden, he also worked for a time in the hull department at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, as well as being known as a string band music instructor in Philadelphia PA. By 1930, the family had moved to 1913 Carman Street in the East Camden section of Camden NJ. Besides Andrew, the family included sisters Marie, Ruth, and Helen, as well as brothers Joseph and James. 

Andrew F. Dickson had been a member of the New Jersey National Guard prior to the mobilization of 1940. He was discharged in November of 1941, and was called back to active duty two months later. When the war broke out, the Dickson family was living at 718 Cedar Street in North Camden. All the Dickson brothers went to serve in the armed forces. Joseph Dickson had also been in the National Guard, and was serving in Washington by May of 1942. James Dickson enlisted in the Marines at the age of 17 on January 20, 1942. Andrew Dickson was also serving in Washington in May of 1942.  

Andrew Dickson's father passed away on January 31, 1943 at the age of 47. At the time, brother James was in the South Pacific, brother Joseph was serving in Georgia, and Andrew Dickson was stationed in California. Andrew Dickson was still in the nation's service when he was killed in an accident involving a coal truck in 1945, in Atlantic City NJ. He was survived by his mother and his siblings.
