Ferry Avenue

In 1820 the road known as “Ferry Road”, present-day Ferry Avenue, was opened from the southerly end of Front Street in Kaighnton, the settlement at Kaighn Avenue and the Delaware River, across the lands of Joseph Kaighn and Isaac Mickle to the center of the road leading from Woodbury to the Ferries which we know today as Broadway, and was at first called “the straight road to Woodbury” or the “Branch Road”. In 1832 it was extended to the Mount Ephraim pike (Mount Ephraim Avenue), the extension on one of the early maps being designated “The Road to the Race Track” while on Sanders’ map of 1855 it is named “The Kaighn’s Point Road.” The first part of this road was four rods wide, while the extension of 1832 was only laid out two rods in width. At Mount Ephraim Avenue the extension met a road which passed the Charles Cooper plantation (Woodlynne), and was commonly known as the “Cooper Road”

In 1859 Ferry Avenue was taken over and improved by the Stockton and Newton Turnpike Company and converted into a toll road with toll-gates at Mount Ephraim Avenue and the White Horse Pike. The incorporators of the turnpike were closely allied with the Kaighn’s Point Ferry and its operation was based on its serving as a “feeder” for the ferry company. The name is distinctive of the part of the county through which the road ran; Stockton being then the local name for the part of the present city west of Evergreen Cemetery, being the present Jackson Street and Ferry Avenue, while east of Mount Ephraim Avenue the road passed through what was then Newton Township. The company abandoned its charter about 1875 and the highway known today as Ferry Avenue reverted to the city.

I used to work at Clarkson Laboratories which was a chemical plant located at 1450 Ferry Avenue. I worked there in the 1970s but it started in the 1960s.They also had the big blue warehouse next door and briefly ran a company called Stronghold Adhesives inside. The plant building is still vacant as of 2005.They closed in the 1980s sometime. They were owned by General Felt Incorporated.

GIRL CHARGES ESCORTS TRIED TO ATTACK HER

One youth was held for attempting to criminally assault a Philadelphia girl and another as a material witness last night.

Anthony Buondonino, 23, of 1633 Broadway, and Charles Fry, 23, of 1730 Ferry Avenue, were arrested, by State Trooper George Small, Mt. Ephraim barracks, on complaint of Emma Houdner, 25, of 412 West Eleanor Street, Philadelphia.

At a hearing before Justice of, the Peace William P. Fraser, West Collingswood Heights, the girl testified that the youths offered to take her for a ride in Camden. She said they took her to a bungalow at Laurel Mills.

She alleged that Buondonino attempted to assault her and when she repulsed his advances he struck her. He was held in $200 bail to await the action of the grand jury. Fry was held in $100 bail as a material witness.

FALSE PRETENSE CASE DISMISSED BY PANCOAST

Police Judge Pancoast yesterday dismissed charges against Martin Goldberg, 36, of 513 Ferry Avenue, accused by Mary Kelly, same address, of obtaining money under false pretense to open and operate it saloon on the Ferry Avenue premises.

The woman testified she gave Goldberg $50 for a temporary beer license, $35 to install gas and electricity and money for beer, in return for which she was to receive her money back and a 50-50 interest in the business. All she received, she said, was $4.

Judge Pancoast decided the case was a civil matter and had no standing in police court.

FAT WOMAN IN THE WAY

John Kretcher [Isaac Krichev - PMC] , a grocer, of 884 Ferry Avenue, opened his store just in time in the morning to see a colored man swiping his supply of bread and cakes from the front doorstep. He pursued the thief and would have caught him had not a fat little negress he could not recognize gotten in his way and hold him fast until the bread robber made his escape around the corner. Policeman Nate Thornton appeared a few minutes later but by that time the thief and his fat friend were gone.

$2400 Lost In 2 City Burglaries

Camden police today were investigating two separate burglaries which netted thieves more than $2,400 in cash and checks and 20 blank money orders.

According to Detective Albert Devone, the first incident was reported about 10 o’clock last night by Ismael Alicea, the owner of a food market at 644 North 9th Street. Alicea said he returned to his apartment above the market and discovered $900 in cash stolen from a rear bedroom.

The second burglary occurred at Shelton's Variety Store at 922 Ferry Avenue. The owner, John Shelton. reported the loss of $1,562 in cash and checks from a security box,
and 20 blank National Express money orders. Shelton listed numbers on the money orders as SN4084180 through SN4684199.

Police said entrance was gained through the rear of both buildings.

STORE OWNER ROBBED OF $25 BY TWO BANDITS

A South Camden merchant was held up and robbed of $25 shortly before, midnight by two bandits.

John Jacobs, who conducts a grocery at 960 Ferry Avenue, told police he was reading a newspaper when the men appeared. They were not masked. The taller man walked quickly to the counter, Jacobs said, while, the other remained near the doorway.

Pointing a revolver across the counter toward Jacobs, the robber ordered him to hand over all his money. Jacobs complied and was told ·to lie on the floor and make no outcry. After the man at the door gave a signal both hastened south on Ferry Avenue toward Jefferson Street and disappeared.

SOUTH CAMDEN

Fire damaged a bedroom on the second floor at the home of Hyne Miller 972 Ferry Avenue, yesterday afternoon. The fire was caused, it is said, by a child playing with matches, which set fire to a bed covering. Firemen from No. 3 Engine and No. 2 Truck Company extinguished the blaze.

Eli Hunt, of No. 3 Engine Company, Broadway and Ferry Avenue, lost his glasses at the fire on Ferry Avenue.

MAN BLAMES ARREST ON WIFE'S' ANIMOSITY

Despite his plea that he was the victim of his estranged wife's animosity, Charles Yatzus, 45, formerly of 978 Ferry Avenue, but now of Baltimore, was fined $75 in criminal court yesterday by Judge Shay on a charge of carrying a concealed deadly weapon,

M. L. Cobbin, attorney, asked leniency for his client, declaring that Yatzus and his wife had separated, and he took his .32-caliber revolver from the Ferry Avenue home intending to carry it to his rooms in Philadelphia. Cobbin alleged that Mrs. Yatzus telephoned police that her husband was carrying a revolver, resulting in his arrest as he was about to board a ferryboat for Philadelphia.

Judge Shay admitted the story might be true, but imposed the fine because the gun was loaded.

My grandparents, Fabian and Helen Brass, owned the Brass Tavern. My mother Bernice Brass lived there with her sister Emma and brother Charles. When my mother married she moved to Haddonfield, N.J. My Aunt Emma married Frank Percival and moved down the street to 1889 Charles Street. Charles Brass lived in the tavern until his death.

I spent many days visiting them above the bar on Ferry Avenue as a child.

A Mystery: In the 1930 Census a Florence Brass, aged 16, lived at the Brass Tavern along with Bernice, Charles, and Emma. No one in the family has ever heard of Florence Brass, my mother never mentioned her. WHO IS SHE?

If you, the reader, knows anything about this, please e-mail me. I am 72 ad don't know if there is anyone still alive who could solve this mystery.
