Vine Street

VINE STREET in North Camden is on of Camden's "Tree" streets, a feature most likely copied from Philadelphia. Vine Street at one time ran all the way to the Delaware River, where the Cooper's Point Ferry, also known as the Vine Street Ferry, had its terminal. Heading east, Vine Street, like most of the other streets in North Camden, runs all the way to 10th Street.

Vine Street is where you will find North Camden's Holy Name Church. Also located there in past years were Daly's Cafe, Ann's Tavern, and the Standard Movie Theater, also known as the North Camden Theater.

Interesting people who have lived on Vine Street over the years include John Francis "Pop" Daly, and the brothers Theodore T. and Edward K. Cornelius

Do you have a Vine Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

Operated for many years by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Cooper's Point, or Vine Street Ferry operated between Camden and Philadelphia. The Ferry was able to remain profitable even with competition from three other ferries in Camden, but the opening of the Delaware River Bridge brought a quick end to the service. The last run of the ferry was made on October 31, 1926, only a few months after the opening of the then new bridge. The top photo dates from the 1890s.

Charles S. Wolverton was the superintendent of the ferry for many years, retiring when it closed, His son, Charles A. Wolverton, represented Camden in the United States House of Representatives for 32 years

Where a playground now stands at the "point" created by the intersection of Vine & Main Streets, James F. Walton traded as "Walton the Plumber" prior to his death in 1927. He was eventually succeeded by Taggart & Green, plumbers. At 208 Vine, the next building, with doors and signs on both sides, was the Chin Bock Suey  Chinese laundry. The photo dates from the early 1940s, when Taggart & Green's office served as Civil Defense station for Air Raid Wardens in the area.

Open Letter to Congressmen Concerning Ludlow Bill

To the Editor:

Sir-Following is an open letter to the representatives of the United States in Congress.

Dear Mr. Representatives.: Do you, Mr. Representative, recognize that supreme sense of duty is ultimately a worshipped reserve, obvious to all the American people and that through their choosing they bestow upon your honor a reasonable obligation?

In-so-far as the 72 percent petition to debate the Ludlow Bill upon the floor, is it not but the voters prerogative to feel, disappointed visioning a depleted political defense?

The American opinion goes begging for action as they might feel another “Panay" coming on. Hoping the Ludlow Bill comes through the American way.

Commend Colored Worker

To the Editor:

Recently I had occasion to visit the relief office,  at 320 Vine street. While transacting my business there I was interviewed by a colored employee. In my 51 years I have never come in contact with a more courteous and obliging person. She had you feel that though you are down and out, there is still a chance a way out. She sets a fine example for others, a credit to her race and especially to the relief administration.

Three divorces and an annulment were recommended yesterday by Advisory Master Erickson in Camden Chancery Court.

Mrs. Betty Kushner, 28, of 1164 Empire Avenue, testified that her husband, Harry, 32, of Seventh and Thompson street, Philadelphia, deserted her four years after their marriage.

Mrs. Sheldon, Marron and Mrs. Kushner all won advisory divorce decrees.

An annulment was recommended for Emma Coneen, 23, of 6 Cove road, Merchantville, who eloped with Francis J., 3516 North Twenty-third street, Philadelphia, to Media in October, 1932. They never lived together as man and wife.

Southwest Corner
North 7th & Vine Streets

On the SW corner of 8th and Vine Street, was another drugstore, complete with soda fountain. It was the old typical green metal exterior
with the big Coca-Cola circle emblems. I used to get my candy there.
