MARKET STREET must have been named because it had a market, or was meant to anyway. The Market was actually at Third and Federal. Go figure! |
Do you have a Market Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here. |

A.C. Lamar Horse cars furnished public
transportation in Camden until 1896 when trolleys took aver. Seating
about 25 persons, the cars were operated by Camden Horse Railroad Co.,
whose franchise was taken over by
Public
Service. In addition to destination signs, an advertisement was carried
along the top. From the 1880s through at least 1906, Alonzo C. Lamar's
paint supply business was on Market Street just east of Delaware
Avenue, where RCA
Victor
buildings now stand. He also operated the Standard Window Glass Co. out
of the same address. This photograph, from about 1881,
was
submitted to the Courier-Post in the 1950s by Mrs. S. E. Southard, of
Wenonah.

This genial and courteous gentleman opened the business here in 1887, and has since become most favorably thought of. The store proper is about 20 x 30 feet in dimensions, with a large work room in the rear. All the candy is manufactured on the premises, and is always sure to be pure, as it is all under the strict supervision of the proprietor himself. All kinds of candy is kept- Mixtures, Taffies and Stick Candy. When running normally, two skilled workmen are constantly employed. Mr. Zenneck is a native of Germany. He was a resident of Philadelphia for some time before coming here to reside |

3 BOYS ARRESTED, ONE AS BURGLAR Three small boys were arrested last night as lawbreakers. John Greely, 13, of 419 Cedar Street, charged with malicious mischief and breaking and entering, was arrested by Detective John Kaighn on complaint of Carl H. Brummer, of 629 Clinton Street, manager of an American Store at Fourth and Elm Streets, who said he found the boy hiding in the cellar of the store. The other boys, Victor Linkletter, 13, and William Hoy, 12, both of 506 Penn Street, are charged with trespassing. They were arrested by Detective Sergeant Gustave Koerner and Detectives Kaighn and Frank Crawford, who from windows of the detective bureau in new city hall, said they saw the boys on the roof of a vacant three-story building at 427 Market Street. Climbing up the rear of the building they said they cornered the boys hiding behind a chimney, apparently planning to enter the building. All three will be arraigned in police court today. |

MICHAEL C. LYONS' SONS, MARBLE AND GRANITE WORKS, N. E. COR. 8TH & MARKET STREETS THE above place of business was established fifteen years ago by the late Michael C. Lyons, on whose demise last year, his two sons, Andrew M. Lyons and. Simon M. Lyons, succeeded to its proprietorship. Adjoining a neatly appointed office, 8 by 12 feet in dimensions, is the spacious display ground and working yard of the concern, which is handsomely ornamented with a display of the samples of the beautiful monumental work turned out. Every description of marble work is attended to here, including monumental work and building trimmings in either marble or granite. Ten skillful and competent assistants are employed, and two double teams are used to facilitate the transaction of business. The present proprietors are both young men of energy and enterprise, who, by their life-long experience in this line of business, are admirably adapted to successfully conduct the large trade which they possess, being expert and practical workmen, whose subsequent success may be safely predicted. |

1921 Franklin Pierce Alloway and his wife, the former Sarah Lavinia Griffee resided at 645 Willard Street when their first child, my mother, was born on November 24, 1919. Her name was Sarah Lavinia Alloway. They resided at 815 Market Street when their second child, Eleanor Jennie Alloway, was born on December 10, 1921. They lived at 718 Federal Street when their third child, Florence Mae was born on February 23, 1923. They next resided at 513 South 6th Street when their fourth child, Franklin Charles "Bud" Alloway was born on November 7, 1924. They lived at 608 Carmen Street when their fifth child, William Robert Alloway was born, December 31, 1926. The family had moved to 436 Benson Street, when their sixth child, Anna Louse Alloway came on August 5, 1928. When the seventh and last child, Mary Elizabeth was born on August 30, 1930, the family was living at 422 Main Street. The reason given for the continual moving was because of the increase in the family size requiring larger accommodations. Jim Powell |

WILLIAM M. QUIMBY, HOME LAUNDRY This excellent Laundry, which was established here only three months ago, has already won for itself a reputation for excellence that is highly flattering. The proprietor is both energetic and enterprising, and is a native of Camden. He successfully conducted a laundry in Bordentown prior to his opening here. A specialty is made of Lace Curtains and other fine work, everything being done by hand. Six competent and efficient employees are always at work and a team used for delivery purposes. |
