TWO MEN ARRESTED AFTER AUTO CRASH
Threat to Kill Alleged Against One;
Driver of Second Car Makes Complaint

Basil P. Cook, 44, of 449 North Fifth Street, was arrested on charges of assault and battery and threat to kill, and James Fenton, 32, of 834 North Sixth street, was held for reckless driving and disorderly conduct last night on complaint of C. N. Morrow, of 7 North Twenty-eighth Street, following an automobile accident. They will be arraigned in police court today.

Cook and Fenton were booked as "drunk" by Sergeant Stiles Whittaker, though Morrow declined to press such charges against them. Fenton was released later on $40 security.

Morrow was driving west on Federal Street and Fenton, in whose car Cook was passenger, was proceeding east. Fenton's car turned left into Leonard Avenue. Morrow charged that Fenton then backed into Morrow's car.

Morrow got out of his car and an argument ensued. Morrow is alleged to have accused Cook and Fenton of being drunk When Morrow went into a nearby store to telephone for police, Cook is alleged to have followed him, grabbed him by the throat and threatened to kill him. Morrow then struck Cook and broke his hold.

When the Third district police patrol arrived, Cook was standing in the street. He was arrested by Patrolman Elwood Humphreys. Fenton ran into the store and refused to leave. He was dragged from the place by Patrolman Joseph Shreeves.

My parents moved to Camden sometime in 1940 which was the year of my birth.  We lived at 829 North Sixth Street until the spring of 1948.  For a few months we lived at 833 North Sixth Street as there was some delay in the closing on the house my parents bought at 609 Elm Street.

I attended kindergarten at the Cassady School at 3rd and State Streets.  Then I went to first and second grade at the Read School at 5th and York.  From third through sixth grade I attended Northeast School at 7th and Vine.  My younger brother attended Sewell School on the other corner of 7th and Vine.  For junior high I went to Veterans Memorial Jr. High in Cramer Hill.  After that I attended school in Philadelphia.  We moved to Philadelphia in the summer after my junior year in high school.

We were active members of State Street Methodist Church at Sixth and State Streets.  It was a beautiful and vibrant church in those days.

My childhood in North Camden was happy and normal.  It was a cohesive community and a place where you didn't worry about your kids when they went outside to play.  I would love to see North Camden return to some of its former status as a good place to live and raise a family.

CHILDREN ARE BLAMED
FOR VARNISH DAUBING

Daubing of the windows of four houses and a store in the 600 block of North Sixth street with varnish was laid to children by detectives today.
Complaints were made by Frank Pecosca, 631; Joseph Edwards, 633; Harry Ross, 635; Elizabeth Chapman, 637, and Louis Passero, 639, North Sixth street.

Detectives William Marter arid Gus Fortune said the owners of the house could give no explanation of the act. The sleuths asked all if they were involved in labor difficulties and received negative replies.

'THERE are but few businesses that require more 1 skill and constant attention than this one. Among the best and most favorably known in this vicinity may be mentioned Mr. F. H. Vollmer. This gentleman purchased the business a short time ago from Mr. J. Masner, who established it some years ago.

The premises are about 20x85 feet in dimensions. The Bakery is located in the basement. Every device tending to lessen labor is used.

Bread, Pies and Cakes of all kinds are made. Ice Cream is also made.

The services of several capable men are constantly required, and a team is kept to deliver bread to the regular customers.

MECHANICS B.-L OPENS NEW SERIES TONIGHT

The Mechanics & Workingmen's Building & Loan Association, a 68-year-old association, will open a new series of shares tonight at its office, 217 North Sixth street, it was announced Saturday by Wilbert F. Wintz, the president.

"This old and proved association has matured 55 series of stock," said Wintz, "and we are proud of the record established through the years, during which several depressions were weathered and the association kept right on going forward.

"We and all the shareholders of the various series are proud of the record.

"The building and loan, after all, is the ideal investment. It is based on thrift and the investment is in real estate, which is the very keystone, the foundation of wealth. And you don't have to be a wealthy person to buy building and loan shares.

"Shares in Mechanics and Workingmens are $1 each, and then $1 a month. The money is turned back to the buyer with profits later on. America is built on homes, and the building and loan has been and is doing its part. We invite other investors to join with us in the new series."

Wilbur J. MacAllister is secretary of the association.

PEOPLE'S B-L TO OPEN 68TH SERIES OF SHARES

The People's Building & Loan Association, which is 67 years old, opens its 68th series of shares Wednesday night, March 2, at its office, 217 North Sixth street, it was announced today by Reuben H. Gaskill, president of the association, which has matured 55 series of shares.

'The new series of shares, which will be the 68th," said Gaskill, "will be $1 each and there will be no entrance fees. The only payment necessary is the $1 for each share and then $1 monthly until maturity.

"The last series of stock which matured, the 55th, did so in 12 years and three months. For investment purposes, building and loan shares are coming back into their own, and especially is this true with respect to the old associations, such as the People's.

"We are proud of the record of People's, which has stood through several depressions since its organization. This record we invite prospective Investors to inspect at the office of the secretary, Wilbur J. MacAllister, at 217 North Sixth street.

Franklin Pierce Alloway and his wife, the former Sarah Lavinia Griffee resided at 645 Willard Street when their first child, my mother, was born on November 24, 1919. Her name was Sarah Lavinia Alloway. They resided at 815 Market Street when their second child, Eleanor Jennie Alloway, was born on December 10, 1921. They  lived at 718 Federal Street when their third child, Florence Mae was born on February 23, 1923. They next resided at 513 South 6th Street when their fourth child, Franklin Charles "Bud" Alloway was born on November 7, 1924. They lived at 608 Carmen Street when their fifth child, William Robert Alloway was born, December 31, 1926. The family had moved to 436 Benson Street, when their sixth child, Anna Louse Alloway came on August 5, 1928. When the seventh and last child, Mary Elizabeth was born on August 30, 1930, the family was living at 422 Main Street. The reason given for the continual moving was because of the increase in the family size requiring larger accommodations.

Note to Hartmann

To the Editor:
Sir-As a resident and taxpayer I address the following to Mr. Hartmann: There surely is a lot of excitement going on about the orders you are giving out to the housewives of Camden about "help keep the city clean." To begin with, the majority of housewives are doing their best to do so. Why don't you give the housewives a break and look into the things that are causing all this trouble? People have a hard struggle these times and our husbands aren't making the salaries- you and many more are making in the city hall.

My great-great-grandfather, William Heineman (bottom left) and some of his companions at an un-named railroad crossing in Camden, circa 1890s.

I have two others of him, dated 1894. In one he is doing some caulking on top of a water tower, and the other, some smithy work, presumably at the same water tower construction site. The location is not named and it's been driving me nuts trying to find the location via the buildings visible in the distance.

Intersection of South 6th Street & Viola Street
Looking East on Viola Street
May 13, 1951

This pic is taken on 6th Street at 1839, the corner being Viola.  On the left is the store (1839 South 6th Street) and across the street is 1836 South 6th Street (the factory is/was 620 Viola Street- PMC). This picture was taken May 13, 1951 for the May Day Procession at the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart.

The tall woman is Dorothy Gotchel, the shorter folks from left to right are, Janis Gotchel, Marie Ekes, Patsy Gotchel, and Marie DiBenedetto. If you look closely you can see a black girl on either side of them in the back and then a black man back near the car.  I also like the street lamp.
