3rd
Street

THIRD STREET runs north and south, parallel to the Delaware River. Several notable buildings are on 3rd Street corners, but carry the east-west street address, such as the Security Trust Building at 301 Market Street, and the Mickle Tower Apartment House, at 200 Mickle Boulevard.

Do you have a 3rd Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

HUSBAND SENT TO JAIL IN NON-SUPPORT CASE

A husband of less than a year yesterday was sent to county jail in default of a $350 bond which was asked in police court to insure the payment of a $6 weekly support order for his wife and child.

Ernest Reed, 19, of 317 North Third Street, was arrested on complaint of his wife, Louise, 18, of 906 Lawrence Street. Mrs. Reed testified she was married in August, 1932, and that her husband lived with her two weeks. Her baby was born two months ago, she said, and her husband has given her only $4.25 since Christmas.

Reed said he has been out of work and unable to support his family.

MRS. MARY KENNEY DIES, MOTHER OF CAFE OWNER

Mrs. Mary Kenney, 72, of 213 North Third Street, mother of Thomas Kenney, cafe and restaurant proprietor, died last night in Cooper Hospital.

Mrs. Kenney conducted a saloon at Front and Birch streets for 25 years before the building of the Camden bridge. Her children were young when her husband Thomas died and she continued the business established by him.

After the building of the bridge her son took over the management of the saloon and moved it to Front and Pearl Streets. From there he moved to the present address at 531 Market Street.

Mrs. Kenney was taken to the hospital on January 9.

Other children surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Roberts, Mrs. Anna May Geoghan and Miss Marguerite Kenney.

J. E. BOARDMAN, PAINTER,
120 N. THIRD STREET

THERE is scarcely any line that requires the amount of careful attention that painting does, and there is no more careful and attentive gentleman in the business than Mr. J. E. Boardman, who has devoted the best part of his life to this line. He formerly had an establishment at 48 North 3rd Street, but last Fall, finding that his business was growing too large for his place, he moved to the commodious building located at 120 North 3rd Street, which has a frontage of 25 feet and depth of about 70 feet.

Anything in the painting line can be done by Mr. Boardman; all kinds of House Painting, Graining, and finishing Hard Woods, besides all kinds of renovating of Brick Fronts ; in fact, anything in this branch of trade. He does Sign Painting in another department expressly for the purpose.

The successful operation of the business requires the employment of 15 men most of the time and sometimes many more are engaged to fulfill large contracts.

Mr. Boardman has always been a well-known resident of Camden, and esteemed in trade circles as an upright man of business principles.

Boosts Mrs. Gaff and Her Soup  Kitchen

To the Editor:

Sir-Do the people of Camden realize the wonderful work Mrs. Gaff and her staff of women are doing among the poor? Mrs. Gaff has a soup kitchen and practically all of the food is so far donated by our good friend, Mrs. Gaff, committeewoman of the ward.

If anyone would like to help with their wonderful work, with donations of clothing of any kind, these clothes will be given to the needy people, as we have many calls for them. Do not leave clothes around that some worthy person can use. Men, women and children are in destitute circumstances through no fault of their own.

To anyone willing: to co-operate, please phone or drop a card to Mrs. Maud Gaff at 113 North Third Street, Camden, and your donations will be called for. Let's all give Mrs. Gaff a boost.

SQUIRE IN ASSAULT CASE IS GIVEN PROBATION

Albert Mungioli, 31, of 314 Stevens Street, a justice of the peace, who pleaded not guilty before Judge Samuel M. Shay on April 17 to charges of assault and battery on a brother-in-law, received a suspended sentence of three months in jail yesterday. Mungioli was put on probation for 18 months.

Mungioli was charged with kicking John Strang, 307 South Third Street, in the nose, after an altercation at his home last March. Mungioli said he ordered some relatives out of his house, including Strang, and that the latter struck him.

INJURED DOG'S OWNER HITS AUTOIST IN EYE

Charles Richards, of 312 South Third street, Camden; yesterday stopped his automobile at Burlington and Hudson streets, Gloucester, after hitting a dog. Richards inquired concerning ownership of' the dog and was punched in the left eye by the youth to whom he addressed his inquiry.

Richards notified Chief of Police James Smith who learned the youth's identity. He said that he would arrest the young man, presumably the owner of the injured pet.

I grew up at 422 Mickle Street and left in March 1953 to join the Air Force.  At that time there was very little crime in the neighborhood. Jersey Joe Walcott lived at 331 Mickle Street, when he because World Heavy Weight Champion. Yes, the numbers was played and law enforcement looked the other way.  Mayor Brunner was in office for many years and was a big time poker player.  When I was 12 years old, he played at 3rd and Berkley in a place called 3rd Ward Social Club. Big time players came there from far away places to play in this game.  Mayor Brunner was always escorted by policeman to and from.  I earned very big tips from the players, by riding up on my bicycle to the White Tower to pick up food and drinks, in the wee hours of the morning.

Lodging House For Needy Girls To Be Opened
in Camden By Wiley M. E. Church Pastor
Mission Superintendent Announces Plan to Equip South
Third Street Building as Sleeping Place at Few Cents a Night

Camden's first "Haven for Homeless Girls" will be opened next week by Wiley M. E. Church and Wiley Mission.

Announcement of the plan to equip and open a 30-bed dormitory for women and girls, where rooms will be obtainable at a low price, was made yesterday by Rev. John S. Hackett, pastor of Wiley Church, 635 South Third Street, and founder and superintendent of Wiley Mission in the old post office building at Third and Arch Streets.

"The home for girls will be located at 523 South Third Street," Rev. Hackett said. "It will be the first of its kind in Camden, and probably in South Jersey. Mrs. Wallace, Lee, registered nurse connected with the mission, will be in charge. Girls will be able to obtain sleeping quarters for a few cents a night.

"On the board of directors will be Mrs. Emma. Messick, Mrs. William, Richardson, Mrs. Henry H. Bell, Mrs. Harry Bickler, Mrs. Harry Rose and Mrs. Hackett. One-third of the amount needed to equip the building was donated shortly after first announcement of the plan was made during our usual Sunday afternoon broadcast."

ROMA CAFE
600 South 3rd Street - Southeast Corner of South 3rd and Royden Streets

The building pictured above, with the number 600 on the door, is 600 South 3rd Street. When the 1931 Camden City Directory was published, Joseph Griffo was operating a cafe at this address. By 1939 Antonio Cerasaro had acquired the property, and was running the bar, which was by the known as the Roma Cafe. The 1947 Camden City Directory shows that Antonio Cerasaro was still the proprietor, living on premises with his wife Angeline,  and that Americo "Reds" Cerasaro lived and worked their as a bartender. The Roma Cafe appears in the 1964 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory, but is not listed in the 1966 edition. The Roma Cafe had closed by 1970. "Reds Cersaro and John Meloni had by then opened up a bar called RJ's Lounge at 524 West street. It is unclear at this time if the bar remained open under different management. The Roma Cafe stands boarded up and vacant in November of 2003.

JIM'S LUNCHEONETTE
601 South 3rd Street - Southeast Corner of South 3rd and Royden Streets

Originally a pool room, in the late 1940s a luncheonette was owned and operated by the Giovanni Vendetti family. The "Jim" was his son, James Vendetti, who died in 1954 at the age of 39. The family kept the luncheonette open for a few more years after his passing.

At the far right, Giovanni Vendetti. If you recognize anyone else in this photo, please contact me by e-mail.

At Far right: Giovanni Vendetti

My parents, Giovanni and Guiditta (Julia)  Vendetti , lived at 524 South 2nd Street from the late 20's until around 1940 when they moved into the 601-603 building. It was actually 2 houses on the corner and eventually made into one.

When my parents bought the house on 3rd street, there was a closed store front but no pool room. My brother, Jim, who passed away in 1954 at the age of 39, opened the pool room prior to World War II. It had a small candy store front room and the back room had 2 pool tables, a pot belly stove, and some card tables. The guys all hung out at the pool room, played cards, pool, etc. It was a typical corner hangout. I was very young at  the time, but I use to stand on a soda box to shoot pool. I remember during the 2nd World War, as the guys got drafted into the army, their pictures usually were listed in the Courier- Post newspaper. My brother would cut out the pictures and started a bulletin board. I remember there were quite a few pictures listed. A few of them never returned. Never new what happened to that bulletin board.

Eventually, the store front was replaced with a luncheonette. We sold the usual sandwiches, steak sandwiches, hamburgers, meatball , hoagies, sodas, milk shakes, cigarettes, etc etc. Later on, a new bunch of high school kids started hanging out there. That would have been in the late 40s. Seemed to be a new era. The pool room was now gone and the older guys were married or simply drifted off. The back room was now used simply for storage.

We eventually closed down the luncheonette but I don't remember the date.

THEFT OF 3 SCREENS BRINGS 30-DAY TERM

John Rafferty, 35, of 222 Stevens Street, was sentenced Saturday by Police Judge Pancoast to 30-days in county jail on a charge of stealing three screens belonging to Giacomo Daraio, of 706 South Third Street.

Rafferty has been frequently in police court during the last year on charges of drunkenness, and, Judge Pancoast expressed surprise that he should now be accused as a thief. Leon Branch, a detective, testified that Rafferty had stolen the screens.

910 South 3rd Street was abandoned and subsequently vandalized in the late 2010s. On October 3, 2011 a small trash fire in the basement was extinguished by a mutual aid Fire company from Gloucester City, Camden's Fire Department being then occupied by a fire at 738 Walnut Street.

I walked down Joint Alley as a youth thousands of times. It was about one block from our barber shop. It was a small alley street running from 3rd to 4th Street between Cherry and Spruce. It has a very interesting history and was the residence of a popular Camden figure- Johnny Carroll- who rented horses and wagons to Camden City before Camden had its own fleet. He also had a beautiful tavern, for its time, and some beautiful girls, as I am told by my brothers.

Where the red building is used to be a candy store owned by Mr. Abbott. Most children would stop there on their way to school in the morning and after lunch for one-penny candy. The gray building across the alley on the right is where Mr. Carroll had his saloon & stables.

Family Needs Clothing

To the Editor:

Sir-I am a mother of eight children who are in dire need of clothing. There are five girls ranging in age from two to 12 years.

They are in need of underwear, dresses and coats. They are of thin built and small features. The two year old are twins-boy and girl. The boys are in need of shirts and pants, the oldest boy, 15, is in long pants, the next 10 years.

We are on relief and cannot expect much clothing for a large family like this. I would appreciate any help that can be given. I will gladly call for anything, anywhere.

WOMAN KILLED, TRUCK DRIVER HAD NO LICENSE
Two Arrested in Fatal Accident at Eighth And Kaighn Avenue

A 44 year-old South Camden woman was fatally injured at Eighth and Kaighn Avenue last night by a loaded brick truck driven by an unlicensed driver.

The woman was Mrs. Mollie Katz, of 1146 South Third Street. She died in West Jersey Homeopathic
Hospital
of a fractured skull.

The driver of the truck, Thelmer White, 32, colored, of 333 Chestnut Street, told police he was driving without a license but with the consent of his employer, Charles Moore, house-wrecking contractor, of 829 Kaighn Avenue.

White was held in $5000 bail on a technical charge of manslaughter, while Moore was arrested for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate his automobile, and held in $500 bail. Both will be given a hearing today.

According to White, Mrs. Katz stepped from the curb directly into the path of his truck and he could not avoid striking her.

The Second District Patrol, en route to Eighth and Sycamore Streets on another call, was directly back of the truck at the time of the accident and took the woman to the hospital.
