Two men killed, woman wounded in Camden

Someone fatally shot two men and critically wounded a woman, then set a fire before fleeing from a home in the Cramer Hill section Monday morning, authorities said.

Police discovered the victims about 8 a.m. after responding to a report of gunfire inside the powder-blue house in the 2600 block of Cramer Street. The officers also found a small fire in the basement, apparently set around the same time as the shootings. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which was contained to one room. had no motive or suspects, said Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi.

One man was dead at the scene and the other died a short time later at a city hospital, Sarubbi said. The woman was in critical condition Monday night at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, Camden.

Authorities identified one murder victim as Son Do, 31, a resident of the house. The other man, who also lived at the home, was not identified pending notification of relatives. The woman, described as a part-time resident of the Cramer Street address, was not named because she is a potential witness. Police did not believe the shooter was one of the victims.

Behind yellow police tape, neighbors and residents gathered in a parking lot across from the house. Next-door neighbor Tung Nguyen said people regularly came and went at the house where the bodies were found. "I don't know them. They were very noisy," Nguyen said of his neighbors.

The owner of the house, Lan Ha, said a couple in their early 30s had moved in with her about three months ago. It was not immediately known if they were involved in the shooting. Ha said she left for work around 7 a.m., and a neighbor called her a short time later to tell her there was a problem at the house. "I don't know what happened," Ha said Monday morning, as she waited to see if she would be allowed back inside.

An acquaintance of Ha, Peter Tan, 24, of Woodlynne, said the building was primarily used as a boarding home. "She had a lot of complaints to the police," said Tan. "I think it was a robbery."

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi announced that bail was set today at $1 million for Binh Thach, M/40, who is charged with two counts of Murder and one count of Attempted Murder in connection with a triple shooting in a Camden home on Monday, March 10, 2003.

Superior Court Judge Samuel D. Natal set the bail as requested by Assistant Prosecutor Mary Alison Albright. She told the court that the defendant is a flight risk because he is not an American citizen and has no job or other significant ties to the area. Adding to the flight risk, Albright said, is the fact the defendant faces up to life in prison on each Murder count and up to 20 years for Attempted Murder.

Thach turned himself in at Camden Police Headquarters at approximately 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003. The .38-caliber handgun allegedly used in the crime was recovered. Thach and his victims all lived in the boarding home in the 2600 block of Cramer Street where the shootings occurred.

Killed were Son Do, M/31, and Tam Nguyen, M/35. Loan Nguyen, F/26, remains in critical condition at Cooper Medical Center. She is not related to Tam Nguyen.

The investigation indicates the shootings stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the defendant and other residents of the home. According to the investigation, Thach came to the United States approximately four years ago and lived in the Cramer Street house for approximately four months.

The case began when police responded to an emergency call at approximately 8 a.m. Monday reporting shots fired. Officers found the three victims inside a home in the 2600 block of Cramer Street in East Camden. Tam Nguyen was dead at the scene, and Son Do died a short time later at Cooper.

After finding the victims, officers discovered a small fire at the home, apparently set around the same time as the shootings. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, containing it to one room.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Camden Man Charged With Pair of Murders

A 40-year-old city man surrendered to police and was charged Tuesday in an East Camden shooting that left two men dead and a woman critically injured. A running dispute between Binh Thach, 40, of the 2600 block of Cramer Street, and other residents of a boarding home led to the shootings early Monday morning, police said.

Thach surrendered to Camden Police about 11:30 a.m. He was charged with the shooting death of Son Do, 31, of the boarding home. Thach is also charged with the murder of Tam Nguyen, 35, another boarding home resident. Thach was being held Tuesday night in the Camden County Jail in lieu of $1 million full cash bail. He was to be arraigned today in Superior Court on the murder charges.

Tam Nguyen was found dead inside the home near a vestibule. Do, who was in a hallway near the living room, died at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden while undergoing emergency surgery. Loan Nguyen, 26, who was rescued after the shooting, was listed in critical condition Tuesday in Cooper's intensive care unit after undergoing emergency surgery. Loan Nguyen, no relation to Tam Nguyen, fled to the basement after being shot in the chest. A small fire was started in the basement about the time of the shooting, authorities said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and Loan Nguyen was rescued.

Police responding to a report of a man shot at the address about 8 a.m. found several people fleeing the home. They were stopped and taken into custody for questioning. All were later released. A neighbor, Tung Nguyen, said he did not know the victims, but that people came and went at the home and that there was a lot of noise from the home.
