Arch
 Street

ARCH STREET lays between Federal and Market Street in downtown Camden. At one the street ran from Delaware Avenue though to North 5th Street, and the street was a well known thoroughfare. Over the years various projects have encroached on Arch Street, if weren't looking, you would never know it was there... or ever had been.

Arch Street at one time had the Collings Carriage Company, which became the Campbell Soup Company garage, Camden Commercial College, and several other businesses. There were three well known bars, Oetzel's Saloon, the Arch Cafe, and the Genova Cafe. The Cooperson Brothers auto body shop had one of their buildings on Arch Street as well.

Probably the most notable building to sit on Arch Street was the old Camden Fire Department building at 5th and Arch Street. The Masonic Temple sat on 4th Street, just off of Arch for many years, until it was razed to make way for the Camden Fire Department's administration building.

Do you have an Arch Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

Joseph Genovese immigrated from Italy first residing in Mays Landing with his uncle. His wife Mary also immigrated. The photo is of him standing outside his barber shop holding his daughter Angie, circa 1917. Mary Genovese passed in the late 50s and he sold the house in mid 60s, buying  buying a home in Merchantville. Joseph Genovese fathered 10 girls, never owned a car and in his later years worked as a security guard at Campbell Soup which was directly across the street from his barber shop and home. - Jim Wright, February 2019.

GROCER PAYS $10 FINE AS NUMBERS WRITER

Curt Shuster, 48, of 7521 Rudderow Avenue, Pennsauken, proprietor of a grocery at 7709 Park Avenue, was fined $50 and costs last night as a numbers writer by Recorder George E, Yost.

He was arrested yesterday through a trap set by Police Inspector Thomas Thorpe, who in plain clothes, prevailed on a resident to go to Shuster's store and buy a number for him. Thorpe watched the transaction and nabbed Shuster. Thorpe did not identify his "go-between."

Jack Press, 28, of 322 Arch Street Camden, was fined $25 and costs on a charge of malicious mischief preferred by Mrs. Mabel Durham, of Park avenue. Mrs. Durham charge that Press, during a visit to her home, went upstairs and cut up tw dresses and a coat.

"Federal and Arch Streets, from Broadway & Federal Street, Camden NJ"

These postcards date from about 1905. Arch Street is the right fork, visible in the background of the two postcards. On the left, in both cards, the Munger & Long Department Store, known as J.C. Penney's from the 1930ds through the 1960s. To the right, the Camden County Courthouse, which stood from 1904 through the early 1950s.
