Van Buren Street

VAN BUREN STREET is a street that became part of Camden when Newton Township was annexed to Camden on March 7, 1871. It runs south parallel to South 7th Street. The original street began opposite 675 Van Hook Street and proceeded across Central Avenue and Ferry Avenue to Jefferson Avenue. In the early 1940s the Chelton Terrace public housing project was built, and the 2100 block of Van Buren Street came into existence, running south from Chelton Avenue to the railroad tracks at Bulson Street. In the 1990s the Chelton Terrace project was demolished and rebuilt, and today the 2100 block runs from Chelton Avenue south to the newly created Ware Street.

Camden Man Held After Son Wounds Self With Gun

A Camden father was in county jail today because his 10-year-old son accidentally shot himself with a revolver he got from the family car.

James Hayes, 37, 01 2135 Van Buren Street was remanded to county jail by Judge Dzick on charges of illegal possession of a firearm.

The boy, Earl, is in West Jersey Hospital with a wound to his left hand. Police said the lad told them he shot himself Saturday with a .32 caliber gun he had found under the front seat of the auto.

Detective Walter Szalanski told Judge Dzick that the elder Hayes said a friend placed the weapon in his car two months ago and that he forgot about it.

Hayes’ story in court today was that someone placed the gun in the car to get him in trouble with the authorities. He said he had also discovered several pounds of sugar in the auto gas tank.
