TIOGA STREET runs south for two blocks from opposite 1089 Van Hook Street, ending at Budd Street, between Mulford Street and the rear of Evergreen Cemetery. Two families were already on Tioga Street by 1880, the Alfred Brown family and the Christopher Hicks family. Brown was born in England and was a rug dealer. Christopher Hicks was black, born in Maryland. He and his family remained on Tioga Street through at least 1914. Robert Downing and his family had arrived by 1887, The Downings were at 1701 Tioga Street through 1914, they were followed at that address by Julius Maleski and his family, who were there through 1947. By 1930 the Kendzierski family was living at 1829 Tioga Street. The family still retains a business presence on Tioga Street, as Kendzierski Brothers, Inc. |

1815 Tioga Street 1914-1992 Joseph Bittmann resided at 1815 Tioga Street with his wife Catherine. He was employed with McAndrews & Forbes as a steamfitter. They moved into this house from 722 Central Avenue sometime between 1911 and 1914. Joseph and Katie lived there until they passed away. He died in March 1945 and she died Nov. 7, 1946. The house remained in the Bittmann family as my Aunt bought the house from her siblings and remained living there until 1992; when the area became so bad she was mugged one night while coming home. She moved to Audubon Park but still owned the home. I believe after she died in 2001, her son stopped paying the taxes on the house and let the City take it back. It was in bad repair by then and boarded up. Maryann
