Stewart Street

STEWART STREET in East Camden runs for two blocks, from the intersection of East State Street and Federal Street, across High Street, to Howell Street. It lies just west of 21st Street, and runs parallel to that thoroughfare. The houses on the street appear to date from between 1900 and 1920, but that is just my best guess. Many of the frame houses built on Stewart Street have fallen victim to fire over the years.

Do you have an Stewart Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

Mischief Night '96
by Bob Bartosz

Camden New Jersey Fire Department had a busy night as the Little Devils came out on Halloween Eve. The evening started out at 7:07 p.m. with a working house fire at 1042 North 19th Street in the Cramer Hill Section of the city. All hands went to work and had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

Just as this blaze was being placed under control, Units were dispatched to 112 Stewart Street for an auto junkyard fire. Responding units could see heavy smoke and fire in the sky as some half dozen autos were involved. City firefighters were able to stop the spread of the blaze before any of the exposed homes could be involved.

CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

September 16, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported today that a city resident was shot to death late Thursday night, Sept. 15, 2005, while sitting in a vehicle in Camden, N.J.

Camden Police responded to the first block of Stewart Street last night at approximately 11:15 p.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead minutes later.

The victim is believed to be a 26-year-old who resided near the shooting scene. His name is being withheld until his identity can be confirmed and family members notified.

Preliminary investigation indicates the victim was sitting in the passenger seat of a blue 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was parked on Stewart Street, and a friend of his was sitting in the driver's seat. At least one suspect approached and demanded money. The individual in the driver's seat said he had no cash, at which time a suspect hit him in the head with a handgun. A suspect then shot the victim.

The victim's friend was also transported to the hospital, where he required approximately 30 stitches to close the head wound before being released.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Camden County Prosecutor's Office at (856) 225-8400 or Camden Police Detectives at (856) 757-7420.
