NEWKIRK PLACE lay between North 3rd Street, Market Street, North 4th Street, and Arch Street. It could only be accessed through an alley that led east, beginning between 36 North 3rd Street and 38 North 3rd Street. At this point I do not know who developed the land and built the houses, but the 1876 City Directory shows a Thompson Newkirk and a John Newkirk at 38 North 3rd Street. The 1885, 1891 and 1906 Sanborn Maps shows five brick dwellings on Newkirk Place. All were gone by the time the 1947 City Directory was compiled. |
Do you have an Newkirk Place memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here. |
