Louis
Street

LOUIS STREET runs between Haddon Avenue and Mount Ephraim Avenue. It begins at the southern border of Old Camden Cemetery, which is Mount Vernon Street, and runs south to Chestnut Street, where it bears to the right and continues across Kaighn Avenue all the way to Sheridan Street. It is/was primarily a residential street which had at one time many corner businesses, groceries, bars, and other retail establishments. Louis Street also has Whitman Park, a large park dominated by a water tower that lies on Louis Street between Whitman and Everett Street. The park also provided the neighborhood with its one of its names, the pther being Polack Town, as there were many Polish residents there for many, many years. Not surprisingly, given the low quality of human being that passes for political leadership in Camden, when a park at Davis and Copewood Street, near the Ferry Avenue speedline station, was rehabilitated in the mid 2000s, it was renamed Whitman Park.... thus, in modern day Camden, "Whitman Park" is no long IN the Whitman Park neighborhood.

The crack epidemic of the 1980s devastated Louis Street and the Whitman Park neighborhood, and the area has never recovered. For the past 25-plus years the Louis Street corridor has been one of the most dangerous areas of the city, with many mostly drug-related shootings, murders, and arsons.

Do you have a Louis Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

PAIR HELD FOR JURY IN THEFT OF LIQUOR

Charged with possession of stolen goods, Leon Grenkwicz, 21, of 1213 Louis street, and George  Sanders, 22, of 307 Walnut street, Haddonfield, yesterday were held without bail for the grand Jury  by Police Judge Lewis Liberman.

Charges were placed against them by Detective Benjamin Simon after they had been arrested in  Audubon for being drunk and disorderly. Simon said his investigation indicated they were the men  who, on September 25, stole a liquor truck belonging to James Thompson, wholesale beverage dealer, from Fourth and Arch streets, where it was parked.

Simon said that he has the sworn statement of Hugh Gaffney, of 3 Albertson avenue, Westmont, and John Whelan, of 831 Linden street, that Grenkwicz tried to sell him some of the stolen liquor, for  which Thompson is the sole agent in Camden.

Furthermore, said Simon, he has the evidence of a Merchantville man and his sister, whose names he  did not reveal, that Sanders sold them a case of the same brand.

WOULD-BE SUICIDE SENTENCED FOR 'CURE'

One man was sentenced to 60 days in jail yesterday while another was given a suspended sentence when arraigned on the charge of attempting suicide by turning on the gas in their homes.

When Joseph Dadich, 52, a plumber of 1438 Louis Street, faced Judge Gene R. Mariano, the man's wife, Emma asked the court to send her husband away for the "cure" be cause he had been drinking for several months. Mrs. Dadich found her husband lying across the kitchen stove Sunday with, the burners turned on. She got him into the open air and he was revived, after which he was arrested. Dadich drew the jail sentence.

Joseph Grochowski, 22, of 915 Mechanic Street, the second man to be haled before the court on the suicide attempt charge, was found with his head bent over the burner of a hot water heater in the cellar by his brother-in-law, Edmund Kincher. When Stanley Ciechanowski, Freeholder of the Seventh Ward, said Judge Joseph Varbalow had promised to give Grochowski a position, Judge Mariano suspended sentence, and he was released.
