COLE STREET ran west to east from North 3rd Street, opposite the Cooper School, for one block, between Linden and Pearl Streets, ending at North 4th Street. Cole Street appears in City Directories as early as 1876. The street that is listed as Cole Street in the 1872 City Directory was renamed Kimber Street shortly after that Directory was compiled. Their were twenty-one homes on Cole Street. Homes began being listed by 1872 and all twenty-one appear in the Sanborn map published in 1885. 322 Cole Street had a large structure along side of it that was used for business purposes. An alley ran alongside this building and along the rear of the houses on North 4th Street, providing access to Cole Street from Linden Street. There were still occupied homes on Cole Street in 1947. Cole Street was swallowed up in the 1960s when Rutgers began the process of acquiring all of the land that lay between North 3rd and North 5th Streets, and between Lawrence and Pearl Street. Cole Street, which lay parallel to Cole Street between Linden and Pearl Streets, also was erased at that time. |
