CLEVELAND TERRACE appears to have been named after President Grover Cleveland, who served from 1884 to 188 and again from 1892 to 1896. It ran from 212 Stevens Street south to a dead end. Cleveland Terrace does not appear in the 1878 City Directory but already was built when the 1887-1888 Camden City Directory was compiled. There were still homes occupied on the Terrace as late as 1947. In October of 1899 Cleveland Terrace was re-named Kent Place, similarly, at some point by 1929 the name had been restored to Cleveland Terrace. This was done to avoid confusion with Cleveland Avenue in the newly acquired Cramer Hill and East Camden sections of the city, which occurred the previous summer when the town of Stockton was annexed by Camden. Many streets in both Stockton and Camden were renamed at that time, and the name changing in the new section continued for some time thereafter. The 1906 City and 1924 City Directories and the 1906 Sanborn Map refer to Kent Place. The 1929 City Directory lists "Cleveland Terrace, formerly Kent Place, and the 1947 Camden City Directory, simply lists Cleveland Terrace. Cleveland Terrace was erased around 1970 when the Royal Court Townhomes were erected on land between South 2nd and South 3rd Streets below Stevens Street. |
