Camden Streets - Browning Street

BROWNING STREET was originally known as Evergreen Avenue, and runs east from Mount Ephraim Avenue opposite Evergreen Cemetery, and was probably laid out as early as the 1890s. Evergreen Avenue appears in the 1906 Camden City Directory, and can be found on the map below, published in 1914.

On March 4, 1920, Congressman William J. Browning passed away while performing his duties at the Capitol Building in Washington DC. Shortly after his death, Evergreen Avenue, which at that time had no buildings erected on it, was renamed Browning Street in his memory. When the 1924 City Directory was compiled, there still had been no homes built on Browning Street. Construction soon came, and by 1947 many homes stood in the 1300 and 1300 blocks.

Birthday Pig Gives Cop on Circus Duty 'Circus' of His Own It was "circus day" two or three places yesterday, including Motorcycle Policeman Russell Young's home, at 1260 Browning Street, and police headquarters in fact, everywhere he went with his new pig, "Geraldine." Young was 29. "Geraldine" was the birthday gift from Acting Sergeant James Wilson. Presentation was at the circus lot, where Young was on duty. The pig enjoyed riding around all afternoon in Young's sidecar until hunger set it a squeal. Then it was another "circus" quieting the pet.
