Birch
 Street

BIRCH STREET at one time ran from Front Street through to Ninth. Various projects over the years have taken pieces of Birch Street off of the map over the years.

When the Delaware River Bridge was built in the early 1920s, the south side of Birch Street was razed from Front to Third Street. Fourth through Eighth Streets were taken in their entireties over the years as the Delaware River Port Authority required more space for administrative and maintenance buildings, and the Northgate Apartment Buildings were built.

Aviation Machinists Mate Third Class Livio Joseph Banda, born and raised on Birch Street, was killed in action while serving with the United States Navy during World War II.

Do you have a Birch Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

Pancoast Proves 3.2 ·Beer Did Not Make Man Tipsy

Police Judge Pancoast is firmly convinced that 3.2 beer is not intoxicating. He emphatically expressed himself so to George Shuts, 34, of 410 Birch Street, Saturday when Shuts, who was charged with drunkenness, said he had been drinking beer. Detective Clifford Carr said he found the man "down and out."

"You never got in the condition in which you were found by drinking 3.2 beer," the court said. "Right now in New York there is a drinking contest being waged in which the contestants have been drinking a bottle of beer every 15 minutes for the past two weeks and they are not drunk yet."

Shuts then admitted that he had "a few liquors" on top of the beer.

"1 thought so," Judge Pancoast said. "The man who be comes intoxicated on the new beer is either very weak physically or very imaginative mentally."

He suspended sentence on Shuts with the admonition to "stick to the 3.2".

Albert A. Holt (1844-1909) was the editor publisher of the Camden Echo, a weekly newspaper devoted to church news news and the prohibition of the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. The paper was published from 1884 until Holt's death in July of 1909. The paper was distributed free of charge and had some measure of influence at one time, but very little by the time of Holt's death.

CAMDEN YOUTH HELD IN ARMY PISTOL THEFT

U. S. Marshall Bernard J. Tracy last night arrested Martin J. Corbert, 23, of 122 Pearl Street, Camden, in connection with the theft of a .45 caliber automatic pistol from the 157th Field Artillery Armory on Wright Avenue at Ninth street. He was lodged in Camden city jail for a hearing before U. S. Commissioner Wynn Armstrong this morning.

As the result of a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe. Carl Weber, 21, of 815 Birch Street, was arrested two weeks ago, charged with larceny of government property and was held in Federal custody. According to Camden police, Weber implicated Corbert.
